The Architecture Issue is here.

Our November/December issue looks at the buildings, people and ideas shaping Maine architecture right now, from homes designed around the landscape to a cliffside island retreat, a new generation of architectural thinking, and six years of Drink + Sketch.

On the cover, Whitten Architects’ Russ Tyson takes on “The Ultimate Maine Mudroom” with nothing but a cocktail napkin and a pen.

What does it mean to design specifically for Maine?

Our “Designed for Maine” feature looks at residential projects where climate, landscape, materials and everyday life all influence the architecture.

These homes respond to the places where they stand.

Living with the land. On Maine’s rocky coastline, Jessie Carroll Architect reworked an existing oceanfront estate around its setting, rebuilding the rooflines, adding porches, reorienting the entry and garage, and bringing in locally harvested stone and wood shingles. The result is a New England seaside home designed to feel rooted in its landscape.

For Kiran Chapman, blacksmithing is about making useful objects with a human touch. At Soma Metalwork, he forges Japanese-style chef’s knives, kitchen tools, and home goods by hand, drawing on traditional forging techniques and a growing knowledge of Japanese steels. His goal is simple: make everyday objects that help us slow down and pay attention.

A bathroom inspired by Elvira, Beetlejuice, and a little witchcraft. Surf Road Interior Design leaned into the client’s maximalist style with bold Viola marble, a dark maroon high-gloss ceiling, brass finishes, Medusa cabinet knobs, and a light fixture with hands grasping its globes. The result is moody, feminine, and unapologetically gothic.

Would you find it unsettling if a designer you never met used your face on hundreds of designs? Piero Fornasetti became obsessed with Lina Cavalieri’s face after discovering her image in a magazine in the 1950s. He transformed it into roughly 400 variations for plates, furniture, trays, vases, and more, turning her into one of design’s most recognizable motifs.
