Zen Punk Butoh dance/ impro with live music / butoh solo / poetry / music video

POSTS STORIES REELS

The film opens with glimpses of Butoh artist Mai Nguyen Tri moving and spinning in a white costume as she describes her emotional and psychological state, references to her mental health disorder are embodied by choking motifs both visually and in the poem she reads. The film cuts to her crouched in a fetal position on her bed, writhing like a sick child as she refers to herself as an unborn baby. At the end Mai is seen slumped by her window as the film fades to black with the closing word “you”.

🌀Full film come soon! We will be screening our film throughout this summer so watch the space 🫂 dates to be announced.🌀

A little change of the cast update for our tomorrow's @chisenhaledance DIY night 'THREE WIP'

@haylincai won't be able to perform so we have a new artist act. It is the East London Butoh legend @mainguyentri. So excited! Come see us tomorrow Fri 30th at 7pm, link in bio. A bit about Mai:

Nguyen Tri Mai is a French Vietnamese dance artist based in London. 35 years ago, between Brittany and Vietnam, Mai found her creative nest in East London. There, she set home to bring together her multiple identities, and contradictory facets of her arts between the rebellious and the poetical aspect of her Zen/ Punk Butoh dance. Drawing from her literary background, eclectic dance training, and passion for storytelling, Mai’s tragi-comic Butoh theatre mirrors the spiraling journey between life, death, and rebirth. Specializing in site specific performances, Mai also brings her explosive energy to street festivals, night clubs, art galleries or theatres. Her dance practice is based on structured improvisation, performing solo her own choreographed Butoh dance pieces, or dancing in collaboration with improvisational live musicians, poets, and visual artists.

On Friday 23d January
At the hundred years gallery ,

As part of this fundraiser for Palestine and GAZA LIFELINE DRINKING WATER PROJECT, amongst many other acts and an art auction,
we will be presenting this new collaborative performance :

“ NOW IS THE TIMES OF MONSTERS “ written by Grassy Noel Macken.

Grassy Noel ‘s voice recording of this most recent piece will be accompanied by Mai Butoh Dance / and music by Mark Rathmell. Three immensely creative souls who have collaborated in producing performance art together for many years.

Mai Nguyen Tri Mai is a dance artist specialising in improvisation and mainly inspired by the Japanese butoh dance, a form of dance that emerged in the early 1950s in the aftermath of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombings.

Poet and artist Noel Grassy Macken has performed and exhibited internationally from the Foundry to Hundred Years Gallery, from The Venice Biennale to The Tate.
His satirical poetry and poetic prose, often seeped in folklore, expose the cataclysmic corruption of powerful corporations and political psychopaths scorching our earth and destroying the lives of millions of our sisters and brothers across the world. At times stark, at others magical, his poetry and art bring us face-to-face with humanity’s failings, it’s gruesome greed, selfishness and violence whilst also igniting a beacon of hope in the darkness, and a light to where peace resides.

Mark Rathmell is a multidisciplinary artist and musician who has collaborated with Noel Grassy Macken & Mai Nguyen Tri on numerous projects and performances.
Mark is also a member of The Who Boys & DSB.
Mark creates Symphonic Sounds, and incredibly visceral soundscapes .

$A glimpse of the artists stepping into the room with us next Thursday — and a quiet thank-you to @loveaffairbasement for opening a home where emerging experimental artists can rise and keep this essential fundraiser series alive 🤍 Erratic rhythms, granular dust, decaying harmonics, and shadowed movement will unfold into a night where sound becomes witness — a fragile terrain shaped by stillness, erosion, and a shared, beating heart.
