We’re on @nytimes! “Ms. Ukeles saw an entire universe of exploitation, both in the labor markets and in our domestic arrangements, that was being ignored at the expense of all the attention paid to subverting the erotic expectations of men.” by @maintenanceartist

A few days ago, @jeffersonpinder told me about a performance artist who spent the past 50 years embedded with the New York City Sanitation Department - personally shaking the hands of 8,500 workers, choreographing ballets with garbage trucks and snowplows, refusing to let the city forget who keeps it running. I had to learn more. Mierle Laderman Ukeles was groundbreaking in the way she connected life as a mother and the labor of sanitation workers. Maintenance, she wrote in her 1969 Manifesto, is about care. Looking after a child, a home, or a city - it’s the hidden force that keeps everything going. On Friday, I’m thrilled to co-host a special screening at @amacademyrome of Maintenance Artist, the first feature documentary about Ukeles. Special thank you to filmmaker Toby Perl Freilich and @maintenanceartist for making this happen. by @maintenanceartist
**NEWS FROM THE FIELD** MAINTENANCE ARTIST is the first feature documentary about this revolutionary public artist. Ukeles, inspired by Marcel Duchamp, pioneered the notion that routine maintenance – from changing diapers to picking up city trash to caring for the earth – could be acts of performance art. With never-before-seen archival footage, MAINTENANCE ARTIST tells a story of essential workers and radical contemporary art set during the social and artistic upheavals of the last half century. Penetrating, provocative, funny, and deeply moving, MAINTENANCE ARTIST fills a glaring cultural gap and heralds Ukeles’ call for a Maintenance Revolution.
