At 193 mph, Hans Joachim Stuck was travelling faster than a Boeing 747 at takeoff. Let that sink in, 193 mph in a 2.1T SAV. This was more than just an experimental vehicle, it would define the future of BMW M's lineup. For a brand that was known for its brilliance in producing sports coupés honed on racetracks around the world, the idea of a high performance SAV (or any SAV for that matter) was unheard of. The E53 never got an M model, with BMW instead choosing to build the 4.6/8is, brilliant cars, but absolutely not M cars. However, BMW's management anticipated the changing sands of time, and what better way to test the limits of the E53's chassis, than to take the heart of your blisteringly fast Le Mans racecar, and implant it into the engine bay of a track-prepared E53? With Hans Joachim Stuck at the wheel, the V12-powered E53 raced to 193 mph and lapped the Green Hell faster than a Ferrari F430 (wondering why I chose the F430? Well, both the E53 and F430 are @frank.stephenson.official designs!*). This was not only an experiment in speed and physics, it was the start of a four wheel drive revolution. Paired with a six-speed manual, the X5 Le Mans proved that fast SAVs were not only physically possible, but incredibly capable, too. *Frank Stephenson x @automobilipininfarinaofficial #BMW #BMWM #BMWFan #Cars #E53 by @makee53sgreatagain
