Grateful is such an understatement for how I feel right now. @tapa_to thank you so much for this award. Such an honor to bring this deeply necessary story to the warm and welcoming audiences of Toronto!

To the producing companies; @tolivegram @crowstheatre @musicalstageco and @soulpeppertheatre thank you for a beautiful journey, from conception to execution. Glad to have been apart of it!

To the creative team, my cast, the band, the crew, and everyone in between, I hardly have words. Just know I’ve had the time of my life bringing this show to life with you. I love you all deeply.

I did it. I graduated.

I’m so proud of myself. Coming into UNCG, I knew that I wanted to peruse music in some sort of way, so I auditioned for the BFA Musical Theatre Program. Unfortunately, I didn’t get in my first year. So I came into this school with no idea of what I wanted to do. It wasn’t until my second semester of my true freshman year that I decided to go into education, but things quickly took a turn.

I re-auditioned for the BFA Program, and got in! And my life has been nothing but a roller coaster ever since. A roller coaster I’d ride again, and again, and again. I’m immensely grateful for the people I’ve met, and the education that I’ve received. To my class, I’m so fucking proud of the people/artist we’ve become. I’m honored to say that I’m apart of the BFA class of 25’!!

Here’s to us! 🥂
And here’a to me! 🍾

Best in the game. ⭐️ by @malachimccaskill

My dear friend, my best friend, Dominic.

There are no words to describe what i’m feeling right now. Knowing that I will never have the chance to facetime you everyday, to go out to eat, to go shopping, to talk about our problems. In the darkest of times while in school, you were the one sent to me by God himself, to be the friend that he knew I needed. You were electric. A profound dancer, vocalist, actor, musician, a wonderful writer, an all out caring and thoughtful person. And to me, the best friend anyone could ever ask for. The epitome of Gods grace and favor. You have done so much for me, that no one will ever understand the impact that you have had on my life. I am not ok.

I love you forever, best friend. 💙 by @malachimccaskill

I was introduced to this show by a dear friend of mine, and during this time I was falling out of love with my passion of musical theatre, so I brushed it off. One or two weeks later, It was 2am on a September night in my dormitory parking lot when I decided to give the soundtrack a listen. By the time it was over, I was in tears. Never have I ever felt so seen and so understood before, by anyone.

I’ve never been a believer of life changing roles, however, playing Usher has been the turning point i’ve prayed for. To tell the story of Usher was healing for 16 year old Malachi who felt misunderstood, and who’s always heard his body was less than desirable. Was healing for 18 year old Malachi, who realized his thoughts had more control over him than he could ever imagine. And was healing to 21 year old Malachi, who believed all the negative things that’s been told to him about who he has to be, what he has to look and act like, and that who he was genuinely, was not enough.

Usher, thank you for helping navigate through my own thoughts of self loathing, for finding my unapologetic blackness, for healing the relationship with my own sexual ambivalence. Thank you for allowing me to change the perception of myself, and helping me realize that no idea or perception that others may have of me matter. Thank you for helping me realize that I don’t need to change anything, I just need to regroup.

@thelivingmichaeljackson , thank you for this deeply personal masterpiece, and bringing my love for musical theatre to an all time high. I am honored and blessed that I had the opportunity to tell this story. Thank you @stephenpbrackett for your unwavering support and love throughout this process. Thank you @jaquelspivey , for being a confidant, a mentor, and a wonderful friend to me from the very beginning. And to my cast and crew, thank you so much for being there to hold me up, when I had no strength to keep myself up. Thank you for the guidance and reassurance. Thank you for always telling me that I was enough. I know that I am now, more than ever. I love you all dearly. 💜 by @malachimccaskill
