Last night’s HCZ (Harlem Children’s Zone) event at the iconic Cipriani in New York City was nothing short of spectacular, a beautiful testament to the power of community, philanthropy, and shared vision for a brighter future. The evening was draped in elegance, with the grandeur of Cipriani serving as the perfect backdrop for an event dedicated to celebrating and supporting the transformative work of HCZ in providing comprehensive, critical support to children and families in Harlem. by @malikannur_

The nomadic chapter of my life begins. “No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear. I am not afraid, but the sensation is like being afraid. The same fluttering in the stomach, the same restlessness, the yawning. I keep on swallowing. At other times it feels like being mildly drunk, or concussed. There is a sort of invisible blanket between the world and me. I find it hard to take in what anyone says. Or perhaps, hard to want to take it in. It is so uninteresting. Yet I want the others to be about me. I dread the moments when the house is empty. If only they would talk to one another and not to me.” -C.S. Once a man came to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Who from amongst mankind warrants the best companionship from me?” He replied: “Your mother.” The man asked: “Then who?” So He (PBUH) replied: “Your mother.” The man then asked: “Then who?” So the Prophet (PBUH) replied again: “Your mother.” The man then asked: “Then who?” So He (SAW) replied: “Then your father.” #mommy by @malikannur_

Mama Xenia has reached her sunset on January 14, 2024 and we are blessed and grateful to have witnessed it. As she wished, we stayed by her side until the very end.

I was blessed with my mother’s and my brother’s @malikannur_ decision to move from their home in Brooklyn to join me and my husband in Maryland. What our mother wanted most is for us all to be together. For she, my brother and I to be together.

At the time of their move, we did not know Mama was sick. We enjoyed much joy, laughter and family camaraderie up until the time we got her #pancreaticcancer diagnosis in April 2022. Throughout her cancer treatment journey, the love, laughter and camaraderie continued. All photos shared in this post are pictures of us AFTER her diagnosis. She chose to live life to the fullest and enjoy the company of family and friends. And to embrace all things that made her happy and brought her peace.

She thrived in life while undergoing treatment for well over a year. She traveled. She cooked (and ate plenty of yummy food). She spent quality, joyful time with her grandkids. She took solace in her beautiful loft space (while caring for her plants that grew and thrived around her). And she treasured all the special time spent with her daughter and son.

The blessing for Mama and for all of us is that we were together as a family each and everyday since July 2020. And that was her most fervent wish. To spend her days with cherished family and friends. And if she had to leave us, to rest in the comfort of our embrace.

We love you Mama. Always. Thank you for coming to Maryland. Thank you for being a wonderful mother and all you’ve done for me, Mal, Bruce, your grandchildren, your friends, your colleagues in NY, for EVERYONE.

Now rest. We will be ok. We will take care of it. Of everything. And each other. ❤️ by @malikannur_
