September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month. 🩸🎗️🩸

Sickle Cell Disease affects thousands in the Black community, yet education, advocacy, and resources are still far too limited.

Over the past 5 years, my team and I at @riseabovegta have made it our mission to change that. Through the annual @lakeside_hoops_tournament , we’ve brought the community together not just for the love of the game, but to raise awareness and spark conversations about sickle cell disease. 🏀💜

To all of our supporters, volunteers, and players — we can’t thank you enough for standing with us. Although the tournament didn’t return this year, trust and believe… we’re working behind the scenes to bring advocacy and awareness back with an even bigger impact for our community. 🙏🏾

But the work doesn’t stop there. I had the honor of partnering with @vertexpharmaceuticals on their “Impossible to Ignore” campaign — a platform that amplifies the voices of sickle cell warriors and advocates across Canada.

Six years ago today, my life changed forever. A severe sickle cell crisis sent me to the ICU, where I was placed on a ventilator and later into an induced coma for Three weeks. My body was failing—multi-system failure, dialysis, a pulmonary embolism, and a large mass in my cecum. The fight was unimaginable, but by God’s grace, I survived.

Healing has been a long road, but out of that pain, we built something bigger than ourselves. Last September, we celebrated the 4th Annual Lakeside Hoops Tournament—a testament to resilience, community, and purpose. What started as a fight for survival has become a mission to bring awareness and hope to those battling sickle cell.

To everyone who has supported, played, and stood with us—this is bigger than basketball. This is about life, second chances, and rising above. Thank You to all the athletes who participated, friends, family and community members who came out to support.
