Thrilled to have my artwork featured today on GBH’s Jumbotron on the Mass Pike as part of their Community Canvas program! If you’re driving into Boston today from 2-5 pm or 6-8 pm, you can’t miss it!! A huge thank you to GBH for supporting local artists. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
.
This is perfect timing because it happens to be South End Open Studios weekend, and my Boston studio will be open from 11am-4pm on both Saturday September 19th and Sunday the 20th. I’m at 450 Harrison Ave, studio 225, SoWa Boston. Come say hello and see lots of encaustic birch tree paintings like this one (as well as marshes, seascapes, and more)!! (Paintings are also available on my web site: marciacrumleyart.com)

HUGE news!! I am incredibly honored — and absolutely thrilled — to have my October Marsh painting chosen as the cover image for the Sept/Oct issue of Art New England!! This painting is one of 21 new encaustic landscapes that are being installed this week @blue_doorgallery in York. The opening celebration for my solo show Finding Joy is this Saturday, September 13th, from 5-9 pm. I hope to see you there!

“The nation will look at Texas and say we won something far more important than an election. They will look at Texas and say that faith in government has been restored,” Gina Hinojosa, Texas’s governor-elect, during her acceptance speech

The good people won. It’s a beautiful day, and I’m going outside to enjoy it. Keep the faith!! 🇺🇸💙🌊

I’ve been so inspired by the blueberry barrens photos in my feed recently that I decided to do another small barrens painting. This one’s just 7” x 5”. I’ll be framing it today and adding it to the No Place Like Maine section on my web site tomorrow. In the meantime, you can DM me if interested.
.
This painting, like all others in the series, was painted entirely with a palette knife.

Some late season color and texture from today’s walk in Two Lights State Park. Some of these highlights will definitely make their way into future paintings!

🔴 Thrilled that Free Falling has found a new home. This piece is all about the perfect color contrast of golden foliage against a brilliant blue sky, and the rhythmic patterning of the birch trunks and branches.

Only one week left to see In Formation @edgewatergalleryvt in Middlebury, VT!!
.
A gallery exhibition is always an opportunity to push my painting practice into new territory, and for this show I created my first encaustic bird paintings. It was a technical challenge to fuse the birds with a blowtorch without applying so much heat the details were destroyed, but I enjoyed meeting the challenge. The winter cardinals were my very first bird painting, but I ended up creating a painting for every season: summer hummingbirds, an autumn blue jay, winter cardinals, and spring purple finches. Each of the paintings is 20” x 20”. I hope you can stop by to see them in person, but they are also all viewable/available online here: https://edgewatergallery.co/artists/marcia-crumley/

It was a fabulous week in Spain, with temps in the high 70s and 80s. So much inspiring art, yummy food, and laughter with friends. I’m looking forward to returning home to crisp blue skies and sweater weather and time in the studio after some much-needed down time.

Here’s one of my favorite autumn pieces from In Formation at Edgewater Gallery in Middlebury, VT. Fluttering, 36x24 encaustic on panel. Available in the gallery at 1 Merchants Row through Oct 31 or online. Marcia Crumley - Edgewater Gallery

Poppy fields under a sky that seems to be on fire. A winding road along the Maine coast. A lone pine watching the sea. Marcia Crumley paints the places we all wish we were standing, in color so bold it changes the mood of a room.

From Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, October 25, selected works are 25% off at Galaray House. Sizes range from intimate 16 x 16 pieces up to statement canvases at 36 x 36. Each piece can anchor a space on their own, or play well in a grouping of paintings.

Swipe for a teaser of some of the pieces included!

Selected works only, offered exclusively for a limited time.

Visit us at 450 Harrison Avenue, Suites 37-39, SoWa, Boston, or DM us to reserve a piece.

Four days. Two artists. 25% off select works.

From Thursday, October 22 through Sunday, October 25, Galaray House is opening a collector’s window on the work of @annefharney and @marciacrumleyart.

The works are bold, decisively New England, luminous, and textured. They’re the perfect entry point for starting an art collection, or for adding depth to the portfolio you’ve been building.

Select pieces for one limited run.

The list of works drops this week. When the four days end, so does the offer.

Visit us at 450 Harrison Avenue, Suites 37-39, SoWa, Boston, or DM us to get the list first.

Some of my favorite photos (out of hundreds!) from La Sagrada Família in Barcelona. We first visited 15 years ago, and promised ourselves we’d come back when the towers were completed. Well, they sort of are, so here we are. We visited twice on this trip, once on a mid-day small group tour, the other on a late afternoon open ticket to see the best light in the cathedral and to visit the tower on the Passion face. So now we will come back when the bells are installed in the towers.

Some public art from Bilbao. The first has the most troubling history.
.
The Towing Women (*Las Sirgueras*) by Dora Salazar, which pays tribute to the women who towed vessels along the Bilbao Estuary using only a towrope and their own physical strength. It was grueling, back-breaking labor that employed women because they were cheaper to employ than oxen. How’s that for maddening?! It was one of the few ways that these women were able to support their families while their husbands were off fighting in the Carlist Wars.
.
Aterpe 1936 (La Huella) by Juanjo Novella, atop Mount Artxanda (Artxanda Viewpoint), overlooking Bilbao . Dedicated as a memorial to all who fought and died defending democracy against fascism during the Spanish Civil War and the mark (fingerprint) they left on history.

Maman by Louise Bourgeois, a tribute to her mother. The giant spider’s towering legs protect a sac of eggs symbolizing the complex, fragile and protective nature of mother hood.
.
“The Tall Tree & The Eye” (El gran árbol y el ojo) by Anish Kapoor, consists of 73 reflective spheres made of stainless steel, intricately anchored along three vertical axes to emulate the organic shape of a floating tree.
.
Al Dia Del Mar Statue by Vicente Vazquez Canonico, on the Riverwalk
.
Not featured: Puppy by Jeff Koons A giant West Highland terrier, covered in fresh flowers, that sites in front of the Guggenheim Bilbao. Kinda meh.
