THE MANY LIVES OF A WORKING SPACE. Throughout Spring 2026, the 3rd floor of Smith Hall became the home of HOMEMAKING, our research lab at @syr_arch , co-directed by Assistant Professor Omar Ali (@soali ) and me.

Over the course of the semester, the space remained in a state of constant mutation, continuously adapting to the work developed within it. Tables, drawings, models, materials, tools, and conversations repeatedly occupied, reorganized, and transformed the room.

Less a fixed studio than a working infrastructure, the space became a collective field for making, testing, discussing, and revisiting ideas—a space shaped by use and, in turn, shaping the work.

These images document some of its many lives.

(The work produced throughout the semester will be collected in a separate post.)

A few weeks left to visit MUDANZA, an exhibition by Ira Lombardia (@iralombardia ) curated by Iñaki Martínez Antelo (@inaki_martinezantelo ) as part of INFILTRACIONS, a series of temporary interventions in the Museo de Pontevedra (@museo_pontevedra ) where contemporary artists dialogue with the permanent collections.

I collaborated with the artist designing several “structures” that in words of Agar Ledo-Arias (@agarledo ) work as “a large domestic wall in a state of continuous construction that supports works from the collection of the Museum (…), the structure does not function as a conventional exhibition device; rather than simply supporting the works, it places them in suspension. Its architecture simultaneously evokes an unfinished wall, a provisional shelter, the infrastructure of a move, or a sort of domestic scaffolding. Everything appears to exist in an intermediate state. Nothing has been fully installed, yet nothing seems entirely dismantled. It is precisely this state of instability that interests Lombardía. The home ceases to be a stable construction and instead becomes a process.”

Last week we kicked off the Third-Year Design Studio for the Fall semester, which I’m co-coordinating with Ekin Erar (@eerar ) at @syr_arch .

Under the title Where. How. With Whom., the course approaches the city as a living archive — highlighting urban repair as a deeply contextual approach to city-making, housing as the social tissue of the city, and domestic space as a domain of political agency. Architectural projects will become investigations into how housing can support new forms of collective urban life, examining evolving notions of home, dwelling, and the social relationships they produce.
As a critical part of the course’s pedagogy, we’ve also put together a series of lectures that will take place over the first half of the semester, expanding on the main themes we’ll be working around.

These sessions are framed as part of Domestic Affairs, a lecture series I’ve been organizing within the School of Architecture since 2022, exploring alternative ways of practicing, understanding, and evaluating the architectures of the domestic. Each term, the series brings together a range of invited speakers to present and reflect on their most recent work — engaging a territory that is expansive, complex, and often contested: the evolving nature of domestic space, and the many ways it continues to shape, and be shaped by, design practice.

This semester, we’re excited to welcome Verena von Beckerath (@heidevonbeckerath ), Felipe de Ferrari (@plancomun_ ), and Philipp Esch (@studioeschrickenbacher ) as guest speakers. by @marcospargap

This summer I visited my very first built project — a Civic Center in Galicia, Spain, completed over 20 years ago. Despite a few small additions along the way, it was rewarding to see the building still holding onto the essence of the original proposal…

How do we represent distance? What do we take with us, and what do we leave behind when we move? Between the lightness of the body, the immensity of the ocean, and the weight of our memories lies the ongoing process of carrying, transforming, and rebuilding a sense of home.

Title: UnCanny Home

Description: UnCanny Home explores the quiet negotiations Chinese immigrants make to transform rigid American housing into culturally resonant domestic spaces. What might appear “awkward” or “out of place” at first glance - like slippers stored in bathroom cabinets or altars placed on AC — are, in fact, canny adaptations that reveal immigrants’ spatial agency. The project captures these uncanny moments not to critique, but to illuminate the layered homemaking process across cultures. Through interviews, photographic documentation, and spatial analysis, the research presents stories from individual families shaped by distinct cultural, regional, and personal backgrounds. The exhibition amplifies these tensions through creative reinterpretations of real domestic conditions, reimagining how cultural rituals might inhabit overlooked, unclaimed, or unconventional spaces. These speculative spatial interventions make visible the hidden discomforts and quiet resilience embedded in immigrant domestic life. UnCanny Home neither romanticizes nor diagnoses but invites reflection on how home is redefined in translation and how design can better respond to diverse cultural ways of living.

At the core of HOMEMAKING ’s mission is a commitment to rethinking domestic space — the places where we dwell and the relationships they embody. Through lectures, design studios, seminars, and workshops, we empower students to become active agents of change, questioning how architecture can respond to shifting social dynamics. The lab critically examines evolving ideas of labor, care, ownership, and family, understanding the home as a site of negotiation where political, cultural, financial, and environmental forces take shape.

Title: Summer Friends

Description: “Summer Friends is a collective housing prototype that combines year-round residents and short-term rentals in one structure and also aims to quietly densify the primarily single-family city of Newport, RI. The ‘solid floors’ are for permanent residents and can expand into the seasonal floors above or below in the offseason, expanding their livable area. The seasonal floors have an open, flexible plan, utilize low-cost construction, and capitalize on passive cooling and heating through expansive folding plexiglass accordion doors. The project is a proposal for seasonal communities based on sharing rather than real estate commodification and sprawl.”

Title FRICTIONSCAPE

Description: “FRICTIONSCAPE is a project that aims to dismantle our preconceptions of what a corridor is and its function in the domestic sphere. The project uses Robin Hood Gardens, a failed domestic project attempting to reimagine the corridor, as its main subject. Through the means of recomposition, FRICTIONSCAPE creates clusters of domestic space organized in a horizontal plane, instead of the typical stacking organization architects constantly repeat. In addition, the project is conceptualized as one that never ends. In fact, the domestic realm created by these kit of parts can be reconfigured over and over again.

The project also makes a statement for collective living. Kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, etc are arranged next to each other to pool resources. In this domestic realm, corridors do not necessarily cease to exist. Instead, the corridor now exists within the kitchen or the bathroom, using domestic activities as the vehicle/backdrop for circulation. In doing so, inhabitants, or family members, are encouraged to face the friction created by living with one another.”

Title: Nine Lives; The Convergence of the Touristic, the Domestic and the Numinous in Caribbean Grief

Description: “Nine Nights is a long standing tradition in some Caribbean countries where there is a nine day period of celebration, following a death. This ritual is rooted in the spiritual belief that the spirit of the deceased remains on earth for nine days after they die. Formerly, this tradition involved a celebration on every one of the nights before the spirit’s departure. Most modern Jamaican families only throw a massive party on the ninth night, the night before the funeral service. My proposal responds to this specific condition and ritual in Jamaican homes and create a celebratory space to hold grief. It is a conceptual hotel, advertised as the Mourning Inn, built to house those celebrating the deceased for 9 nights. This siteless hotel comprises 9 floors with 9 rooms on each floor arranged in a 9 square grid. It is a satirical commentary on the ways in which the tourism industry hides reality. This hotel is not meant to be an idealized situation for these families, but instead a statement.”

Title: Almost Home

Description: “Almost Home is a prototype for a post-disaster community living room that addresses what typical shelters lack—comfort, connection, and a sense of belonging. After disasters, shelters often provide only basic survival needs, leaving people isolated and emotionally unsupported. Almost Home fills that gap by creating a shared space where displaced individuals can gather, cook, talk, and heal together. It encourages communities to return and rebuild, not just physically but emotionally, using salvaged materials and personal items that carry meaning. These fragments of the past serve as emotional anchors, helping people reconnect with what was lost. The space evolves alongside reconstruction efforts, offering a place of stability and familiarity. Almost Home is not just about temporary relief—it’s about creating a foundation for long-term recovery through community and memory. Recovery starts with people, not just buildings, and this project aims to remind survivors that even after great loss, pieces of home and hope still remain.”
