Let’s talk about The State of Affairs by Esther Perel

I picked up this book out of one, pure fandom of Esther Perel’s work, and two, curiosity for the topic of infidelity which (unfortunately) is prominent in our everyday. Instead, this book makes me reflect on topics such as desire, identity, and the versions of ourselves that come out through other people.

When we think about affairs, we often narrow it down to a symptom-based approach: there is a problem with the relationship, or a problem with the individual. But Esther goes beyond that. She talks about how affairs can bring individuals into contact with versions of themselves that stopped existing years ago, reignited through the excitement of a secret love, or simply a version of themselves that never existed.

Which shifts the question from ‘why did you have an affair?’ to ‘who did you get to be in it?’

There’s something hopeful in that question. One that makes us ask ourselves which parts of us are being slightly underused. What version of ourselves are we getting to be in a relationship, and what side remains dormant? And how can we stay curious about ourselves and others, so we don’t have to leave a relationship to meet them?

Anyways. A surprisingly tender read for a messy topic.

Food for thought x

Jimmi’s place

From Jimmi’s mother’s pot straight to the plate, cooked daily. A Greek salad I could tell had been cut there and then; an olive oil like I’ve never had before (look how golden - but I’m also at the heart of one of the biggest olive oil production regions); artichoke hearts in lemon sauce; hand cut potato fries; and Jimmi insisting on me walking away with a gemista for tomorrow.

I love Ellada, I feel lucky to be Ellinida, and I crave to see every bit of this country, from its landscapes to its people to its recipes.. and the list goes on. And i know each will make me fall in love even more (!!!)

People-pleasing this, people pleasing that. We hear it all the time, every day. Trust me, I used to be the first in line to abandon my own needs just to keep the vibe pristine.

Here we are instead: reclaiming our power, keeping our hearts wiiide open, and learning to survive a boundary 💓

A raw, unfiltered look at unlearning the safety of self-erasure + 6-step disappointment ladder.

Recently prescribed myself to living out of the city for a little bit, away from my usual bustling social life and speed of running from one thing to another. Currently investigating what it means to be living a life with more intentionality, pouring my attention and intention into the things that really matter to me (and that, I suspect, will fulfil me long term). I can feel both my heart and brain expanding in real time. Kinda cool xx by @margueritelynas
