Finally is out!! I still trip on this photo. I have never taken a photo like this at Puerto in all the years I’ve been swimming at Zicatela. That morning I decided to swim out with @yana_vaz_imagens & @dr.eduardooz and before we went out, we pray to God for protection and blessings on the water and oh how this wave and positioning was a blessing!! I was chatting it up, when my friend told me to look to my right. The biggest wave of the day was forming, and in a moment, that wave, became the most perfect barrel ridden by @gerglong . And with God’s help undoubtedly, I was in the right position to capture it’s perfection!! I have never seen Carmelitas, look like a slab, instead of a beach break, but somehow, in this shot it looks like it. And I’m so grateful that it made it to @tracksmag . This days with less and less print surf mags out there, it feels extra special to see my work in tangible, physical form, not just lost into the cyber world. I wish I could put the whole sequence here, but sadly I had to choose just a few of them. Slide through to see them!! ➡️ #puertoescondido #zicatela #Oaxaca #mexico #farbar #mexicanpipeline #bigwaves #surf #surfing #surfer #surflife #waves #beach #beachlife #wave #photography #photo #visitmexico #photographer #surfphotographer #nikon #nikontop #travel #explore #mexicosurf #photography #printisnotdead by @mariafernandaphoto
~ My Essentials ~ I’m so used to be the one behind the lens. It’s hard for me to feel comfortable at all, in front of the camera for once. I feel uncomfortable, vulnerable and so judgmental about myself and how I look. Yesterday morning though, I had the best time being photographed by the legend @seasachi and I actually love how I look on the photos she took of me! What do you all think, should I start posting more photos of myself? by @mariafernandaphoto
“The first time I travelled to Tahiti was in 2017. I had to swim and document this legendary wave. The place is magical, and the reef creates a perfect and constant barrel, making it an incredibly beautiful wave. I captured this wave during my best session.” @mariafernandaphoto Find out about the story behind this photo in our ISSUE 01, out soon. #sheseasmag #WomenWhoSurf #WavesAndWomen #SheRidesWaves #magazine #surfmag #surfphotography by @mariafernandaphoto

Happy birthday to this absolute gem of a best friend 🎂🍰🧁🥮🤍 We met more than a decade ago while surfing Rocky Point. She wanted to film big waves, and I wanted to surf big waves. It was a match made in heaven. I’m the shortest person you’ll ever meet, and she’s the tallest girl in history, so really, what could go wrong? Since the beginning, we have always hyped each other up. Whenever she wanted to quit, I wouldn’t let her, and whenever I wanted to quit, she wouldn’t let me. Most of the questionable decisions we’ve made probably happened because one of us convinced the other that it was an amazing idea. So yes, the hyping has worked both ways! More than a decade later, we’re still doing this. We’re still keeping it real, still laughing, and still having fun everywhere we go and still at this day and age getting in and out of trouble like it’s our job! Maria and I have literally traveled the world together sometimes without one cent to our names 😆 from the depths of Puerto Escondido to Chile, Brazil, Europe, and remote Asia beyond. We have gone in the most fancy dates and also ate out of a yogurt container in posh central London. At one point, we were also convinced we were going to become famous reggaetón artists. Honestly, the dream might still be alive. We always had a saying: “In it to win it.” At this point, I don’t know if we won, lost, or maybe did a little bit of both 🤣☝🏾 but all I know is that we had soooo much fun along the way I would not have it any other way. So many things have changed over the years, but one thing hasn’t: our friendship. We are complete opposites in every possible way. If you know one of us, just imagine the exact opposite, that’s the other one. Somehow, we’re still here, still best friends, and still fighting every trip we take together. Happy birthday, Nanaboo. Loving how an AD sparked a trend that got every female athlete to be proud of what their wonderful bodies can do, how hard they push themselves, and everything they’ve achieved in sports. If we could always be this proud of what we do and of how strong, resilient, and capable our bodies can be in every sport we pursue, the next generation won’t have to struggle just to prove that they can. They’ll already know that they are so much more than just a pretty face or a “hot” body. #womeninsport #womeninspiringwomen #femaleathlete #womeninsports #sports by @mariafernandaphoto
Honored to be nominated again for the @bigwavechallenge , this time for Biggest Male Paddle Wave, with this wave from @jojoroper . The last couple of years I haven’t been chasing big swells quite as much as I used to, aside from Nazaré, so making the top three biggest paddle waves of the year feels pretty special. And especially with Jojo on this one. I’ve known him since my San Diego and Puerto Escondido days, and it’s pretty cool to see that he’s still one of the few willing to paddle out in Nazaré when it gets serious. The funny part is, I wasn’t even planning on filming that day. I just happened to be there with my camera, saw that the waves were looking good, pulled it out, and this gem appeared. Pretty stoked to have been there for this one. 🌊 by @mariafernandaphoto
