Chapter 15 - I love it when a plan comes together…

4.5 weeks out

If you’ve done serious strength training or powerlifting before, you’ve probably had the experience of seeing what weight you’re supposed to hit for however many reps and your stomach just kinda drops into your socks.

That happened a lot this 5-rep block.

Buuuut outside of a butt lift on the last rep of bench, I got all my lifts!
My biggest concerns for each lift are :
Squat : beating queues
Bench : keeping my butt down
Deadlift : off the floor and full lockout

But we’ve got a plan for all of it. Time to execute 💪

Powerlifting Prep Chronicles : Season 1
Chapter 14 - Road work ahead? Uh yeah, I sure hope it does…

Being in the 5-rep max block is EXHAUSTING. I’m pulling weights for reps that I haven’t hit in over a year, even before injury (my training wasn’t as regimented as it is now). But I’m feeling good, things are just getting heavier lol

A great sumo cue I’ve been ripping since this workout is “act like a dog taking a poop”. I did not do that for one of my top sets, which is where you see me switch from sumo to conventional. It’s been making a huge difference since then!

Deadlift stances are so weird to me post injury- my back feels like shit if I start the session in conventional, and my hamstrings stop cooperating at a certain weight in sumo.
The solution? Pulling both lol start in sumo, switch to conventional at 75-85%. And it’s been working fantastic, my back isn’t bothering me and I still feel my hamstrings working.

Maybe one day I’ll commit to one stance or the other. As a former “sumo is cheating” unbeliever, my religion has changed 😂

Chapter 13 - Who hurt Mr Wendler?

BLOCK B!! Your favorite newest powerlifter is officially done with Block A of prep and moving onto Block B! Feeling strong and no sign of burnout or creeping soreness so we’re gonna hold off on deloading for another 2ish weeks as long as recovery upholds!

Moving into Block B, I’m jumping back up to 5-rep sets. I’ve upped my weights since the beginning of prep so while 40% used to be less than the bar for all lifts, I’m now around 55-65lbs at 40% for all lifts.
I was spoiled the last few weeks with 1-3 rep sets; 5 reps feels like a labor 😭 I understand a few more powerlifter stereotypes now, and I am genuinely curious as to the state of Jim Wendler’s mental health when he wrote 531 😂

531 has been such a cool program to run for this prep; I feel like I’m seeing improvements so much faster than the first time I learned to SBD (granted, I’m approaching it with more knowledge and muscle memory this time around) but it’s still crazy to see weights I struggled with outside of prep move so much easier while in prep!

Onward and upward, Jimmy!

Chapter 12 - Last mag, make it count!

As prep continues, life gets busier. Which would be great if I didn’t have prep, and prep would be better if things didn’t keep popping up outside of my control…

But I was having a good conversation with @christreanortraining about this the other day : If you can figure out how to balance fitness in the busy seasons, you’ll have no problem staying consistent when the schedule is less hectic, kids are out of school or you’re just having a bad day!

It really is the difference between people who reach their goals and people who don’t. If you’re willing to keep working towards the mark even in less than ideal circumstances, you’re still making progress! Slow movement is better than no movement!

I am 100% someone who falls into a completionist, all-or-nothing mindset. If I can’t put my best effort forward to make a workout as good as it could be, I don’t even want to go to the gym.
Being in this stage of prep, getting my lifts in even though I run out of time for all of it, is teaching me to be more patient with that part of myself that wants it to be perfect.

Plus it encourages me to prioritize training and find time to finish the workout later 💪

Chapter 11 - Can you hear me now?

Prep is getting real.
Missed meals are making a bigger impact.
Recovery is more beneficial.
Mental wellness is key.

Monday through Friday consists of 2 things : work and working out. And while those are both my favorite things (god I wish that was a joke) all work and no play does make Marie a very dull girl.

Finding balance requires sacrifice, but everything that’s worth it- well, it’s worth it ⚖️

Rich has been fit and strong most of his life.

Strong for his kids, strong for his friends, strong for his country.

So when he was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and medically discharged, life was turned upside down.

Instead of giving up, he found new strength in fitness and training.

Staying strong and resilient for those around him, he has stayed ahead of his health even with constant setbacks.

The most recent being surgery to remove an occlusion, and several weeks of not being able to lift with his community.

But even so, Rich has not given up.

Anxiety, pain, sickness be damned!

Rich is a constant inspiration to everyone here, showing us that true strength does not come from staying standing, but by getting back up no matter how often we’re knocked down.

Thanks so much for being such a positive and inspirational member Rich. Love having you in this community!

Chapter 10 - Sweet, sweet victory!

Super rad max out session on deadlifts! The double bird is due to finally pulling the weight that borqed my left hamstring 2 months ago 🖕🏻155 is back to being my lil b*tch

Going into the next block, I want to work on speed! These reps look fine but I am gonna run out of gas as things get heavier…

Since I’m still not sure what my post injury rep maxes are, I’m gonna have to be careful about going up in weight “just because I feel like I can”. That way of thinking got me hurt a lot in the last year so NO MORE.

Since I pulled 155 (relatively easily for being end of the session) I’m assuming my max is around 175, which is what I’d like to hit at comp in 5.5 weeks 😬

But who knows?
A lot can happen in 5.5 weeks 🤷🏻‍♀️

Powerlifting Prep Chronicles : Season 1
Chapter 9 - Where’d everybody go?

Things are starting to get real for my first prep. I’m 6 weeks out at the time of posting (7 at the time of recording), and I feel good but I’m also worried about feeling TOO good if that makes sense?

I’m still eating everything in sight but I don’t feel like my weight has changed. I have a weigh-in this week so we’ll see but UGH I’m just nervous 😩

Lifts are going well though! I’m feeling super strong on bench and I’m getting closer to finding a rep max for squat and deadlift. I suspect I’ll be somewhere around 160 for squats and 175 for deadlift when I’m called for my first platform ready!

Only a few more weeks to go…
