A “whale in the room” made it into the Rachel Carson Center: our shared panel for their environmental conference, with David Rothenberg @d.rothenb, Finn Woodson-Gammon @fwoodsong, Alex South, and Marie Comuzzo @mariecomuzzo. We discussed music, language, and meaning in cetacean communication as well as the political and ritual power of grieving with whales. We also introduced different methodologies of knowing, some of which require vulnerable and embodied encounters between humans and whales. What do these reveal that technology mediated ones cannot? I still remember the exact moment this chapter started coming to life, after Evan MacCarthy invited me to give a talk for the ELEMENTS project at the Kinney Center for Interdisciplinary Renaissance Studies, at @umass University of Massachusetts Amherst. Today, that research is officially out in the world in a REAL book!!! 🪩🐋📖 For the past two weeks, I have been celebrating the publication of Listening to Swan Song, an open-access (!!!) edited collection published by Brill. The volume explores how humans and more-than-humans shape multispecies sonic and musical culture.

By framing whale songs as a political force, my chapter, “Listening with Whales: From Silence to Song,” ultimately argues that listening to and with whales, and recognizing more-than-human cultural agency, represents a vital path toward decoloniality and ecocentrism. A HUGE thank you to Piotr Kociumbas and Joanna Godlewicz-Adamiec for their thoughtful editing and all the hard work that went into making this volume a reality. I am also especially grateful to my advisor Bradford Garvey, and mentor Marianna Ritchey, without whom this research could have never come to life.
