(BE)LONGING Velorose Charterhouse Square To 1 August Monday to Saturday 12pm to 6pm . . . Material takes centre stage today. Copper, cyanotype and textile collage (recycled bed linen!) each becomes the language through which @aliciaharperart @marionflanaganart and @clare_sams respectively explores our relationship with the natural world. Whether shaped by oxidation and soldering, sunlight, or cut / glued / stitched by hand, these works remind us that belonging and being are often rooted in landscape, ecology and the creatures with whom we share our environment. 3 artists. 3 distinct practices. 1 unplanned and unexpected conversation. Visit (BE)LONGING throughout July and discover over 80 artworks by over 70 artists responding the the exhibition’s 3 themes (of Being, Longing, and Belonging) . . . Alicia Harper Oxide Trace (Triptych) (2026) Copper 20cm x 20cm x 1cm (3no.) Unique £2100 Artwork 4 . . . Alicia Harper is a London-based artist working across sculpture and material processes. Using mixed-media, her work explores human and non-human collaboration, slow cycles of making, and the tension between control and unpredictability . . . Oxide Trace I, II and III develops through the application of heat, solder and patination across copper panels. Solder is used with flux to disrupt its typical function of joining, instead forming irregular surface traces shaped through heat and movement. Oxidation is introduced through patination, producing shifting colour and surface variation in response to atmospheric conditions. The work reflects states of in-betweenness, where surfaces remain unsettled, control remains partial and surfaces resist resolution; continuously formed and undone . . . #belonging #velorose #londongallery #contemporaryart #copperart Marion Flanagan Our Nature 1 (2023) Cyanotype Print with Acrylic Paint 21cm x 29.5cm Unique £367.50 Artwork 5 . . . Marion Flanagan is a multi-disciplinary Canadian artist working in Toronto. Her work moves between sculpture, painting, photography, and installation, always considering the materiality of the chosen medium. She completed her MA Fine Art at Chelsea College of Arts, UAL . . . I'll be showing this cyanotype at the Velorose Gallery Summer Show in London from 22 June to 1 August. The theme of Be(longing) resonated with me as this work looks at how we re-engage with nature, or not, and how some of us yearn to relocate to the forest or coastline while living in dense urban centres. It's unfortunate that our last class of the year was interrupted by a fire alarm and an evacuation. The long wait time meant that everyone ended up in the Village by the Grange food court, then they eventually wandered home. I really enjoyed working with the students in Form and Time this term and wish everyone a restful and peaceful summer. Thank you for sharing your creative ideas and life stories with me. ... #torontoart #torontolife #ocadu #contemporaryart #artseducation by @marionflanaganart
A few times a year, I like to capture a photo from this exact location by the brook that's near my home. An accumulation of years of these photos will create a series that tells a story. Maybe the story will be about the changing weather, while the trees and water remain unchanged. Today, large snowflakes are falling, which muffles the sound of everything except the moving water. I stop to listen for a while. A dog runs by followed shortly by its owner. This takes me out of my meditative calm and reminds me that break time is over. It's time to walk back up the hill to the city that exists seven stories above me. ... #artpractice #torontoartist #naturesbeauty #torontolife #forestbathing by @marionflanaganart
Today in class, we took the time to look slowly and closely at the colours and textures of nature. Our human brains respond positively to these indicators that we are near our ancestral homes. My eye was most drawn to the sphagnum moss and the small world of dandelion fluff and seed pods captured within it. As artists, we can encourage others to take an interest in the natural world through our art, or to experience the joy of slowing down and observing the world around us. ... #todayinartschool #artpractice #contemporaryart #artsandscience #ocadu by @marionflanaganart

I chose the Outdoor School breakout session at the Global Centre for Climate Action conference this weekend. I met many creative souls on this hike through Evergreen Brickworks who are interested in producing design solutions or cultivating a cultural shift to protect our ecological systems.
