Wars around the globe. American communities in turmoil. An ongoing government shutdown in Washington, DC. All things that may have you feeling worn down, exhausted, even hopeless. Yet I remain relentlessly hopeful. Why? Because wherever I take this campaign right now, spreading a message about the need for a new civic path, people respond by sitting up, leaning in, and stepping forward to take action. Iā€™m back on the road this week traveling across the Suncoast regionā€”from Palmetto to Arcadia to Sarasota to Ellentonā€”and Iā€™m already seeing the same thing play out. Just like the many Americans Iā€™ve met on the campaign trail, the Floridians in these communities have not given up or given in. They continue to believe that we can be better and do better. Theyā€™re getting in motion and building on the good that still exists in this country. I started my time in the Sunshine state by leading a series of roundtables throughout Manatee County as the first step to launching a new initiative for community-led change. Whatā€™s clear is that so many peopleā€”from local elected officials to educators to nonprofit and philanthropic leadersā€”are ready to get on a new civic path in Manatee County. Stay tuned as we continue across Florida this weekā€”with more roundtables, an Unleashing Impact Lab through the Harwood School, and a New Civic Path Book Circle hosted by @thepattersonfdn šŸ“ Florida Swing ā€” Day 1 šŸ›£ļø Next stop: DeSoto County #NewCivicPath #Community #Florida #ManateeCounty #TurnOutward #CommunityInitiative #Suncoast #FloridaLeaders #DeSoto #Sarasota by @maritza_coscarelli
Something I always tell leaders when I'm working with local communities to create real change is that, "You are a scout!" We must always be scouting for who to engage. We must always pitch an "open tent" and make it abundantly clear that anyone is welcome to join our efforts over time. We put that principle into action. The Harwood Team led a workspace followed by a leadership convening that I had the pleasure of leading. Folks from across DeSoto County joined us, many of whom are brand-new to the initiative we've been undertaking there for the past couple years. The key to the success of an initiative like what's happening in DeSoto County is momentum. If we ever hope to change the trajectory of our communities, let alone the country, for the better, we need to build momentum over time. One way to do that is to keep enlisting new allies who can help take efforts farther, faster. I'm thankful to all the dedicated community members, public innovators, and civic leaders who engaged around what it will take to create a new trajectory of hope in DeSoto County. Many thanks to Cheri Coryea, Jennifer Bowser, Alma Ovalle, Becky-Sue Mercer, Linda Waters, Sondra Guffey, David Stewart, Quincenia Jones, Melissa Hirstein, Sherry Oehler, Ashley Coone, @thepattersonfdn and so many others. And thank you to our hardworking and The Harwood Institute Coaches and team members who played a role in helping this all come together: David J. Last week I was in DeSoto County, FL meeting with community leaders and residents from across the county who are activating and leading one of the most promising initiatives for community-led change that I know of today. This is one of the most resilient communities Iā€™ve ever met. Now, theyā€™re seeking to move from resilience to thriving. To keep deepening and accelerating the work they are doing, I led a Community Conversations Training alongside my wonderful colleagues at the Institute @maritza_coscarelli and @thacker.lydia and in partnership with The Patterson Foundation @thepattersonfdn and their DeSoto County Ahead initiative). This training was about far more than how we have better dialogue. It was about holding the kind of conversations that lead to action. We equip Public Innovators to ask certain kinds of questions and produce a set of key themes from their conversations. Then, using those themes, they can enlist allies and generate initial actions that are in response to peopleā€™s shared aspirations. Itā€™s true that better conversations in our local communities and nationally is a prerequisite to how we move forward. Itā€™s necessary, but not sufficient. We need action. And we need to have the kind of conversations that lend themselves to action. Thatā€™s at the heart of the promising change unfolding across DeSoto County today. What would it look like for you and your organization to more intentionally drive the kind of conversations that lead to action? by @maritza_coscarelli

How will anyone believe in you if you donā€™t believe in yourself? I often hear from those of you who want to get out and grow your business speaking. You know what you want, what you believe, and that you have something to offer this world to make it better than it is. And, the truth is you do. What happens next? You go on aboutā€¦ How you are just not ready. How you or your story are too much or not enough. There is so much that you donā€™t want to under or overshare. How you donā€™t have the time, the money, the energy, or the ā€œsecretsā€ to make it happen. I am here to tell you that you are not alone. This is your brain wanting to keep you safe and comfortable. All the reasons you can come up with for not getting started or growing become excuses, and the next thing we know, another year goes by, and your unique brilliance is still left in you. You have something of value to say, and I can help you uncover why you may not be saying it, where to begin and how to do it with joy and ease to get the results you desire in the way of more impact, influence, and income. Why not start here? P.S. I believe in you, and I know you do, too. by @maritza_coscarelli
