THE MOODY SEASON HAS ARRIVED IN MARRAKECH 🍂📷

The darker, moodier season has finally reached Marrakech. And I have to admit, as a photographer, I absolutely love this time of year.

The days are getting shorter, the air is cooler, and especially inside the Medina, with its endless narrow alleys and high walls, sunlight is becoming a rare visitor.

Some streets barely see the sun anymore. The old houses, many without proper heating, slowly become colder, and by around 6 PM, darkness is already settling over the city.

But there is something incredibly beautiful about this season.

The smell of freshly burning wood drifting through the alleys, the quieter streets, the old wooden doors, the faded pink walls and those deep shadows that seem to swallow everything around them.

For my lens, it’s a completely different Marrakech.

I find myself drawn even more to the darker corners, the little patches of light, the silhouettes passing through narrow passages and the beautiful, almost mysterious atmosphere that takes over the Medina.

While many photographers chase the golden sunlight, I often find myself doing exactly the opposite — looking for the shadows, the muted colours and those quiet, imperfect scenes that tell their own stories.

And that’s something I love sharing during my photo tours. Marrakech isn’t always about bright colours, busy souks and sunshine. Sometimes its most beautiful side is the one hiding in the shadows.

A little darker, a little colder, a little moodier. And absolutely beautiful through my lens. 🤎

Absolutely — I’d add it like this so it doesn’t sound as if artisans are definitely closed every Friday:

WHAT DOES A DAY OFF LOOK LIKE IN MARRAKECH? 📷

One of the questions I often get before a photo tour is: Which day is everything closed in Morocco?

The answer is: there isn’t really one.

Friday is the main day of prayer, and it’s probably the closest thing to a traditional day off. Some smaller shops may close around Friday prayer, and many artisans might take the entire day off — but this isn’t a rule. You’ll still find plenty of shops, workshops, cafés and markets open, especially in Marrakech.

And from a photographer’s perspective, that’s exactly what makes it interesting.

Every day has its own rhythm. Early mornings can give me almost empty streets, closed wooden doors and beautiful architecture without the usual crowds. A little later, shutters go up, bicycles pass, people head to work and the Medina slowly changes.

For my photo tours, Friday can therefore feel a little different. If you specifically want to photograph artisans working in their workshops, another day may give us more opportunities. But for street photography, everyday life, architecture, light and those spontaneous moments I’m always looking for, Friday can be just as interesting.

There is no “wrong” day to photograph Marrakech. There are simply different versions of the city — and I love photographing all of them.

Thanks for looking.

WAITING FOR THE RIGHT MOMENT

Most of you probably know this about me already: give me a good corner, some beautiful light and shadow, and I can stand there forever.

I watch how the light moves across the walls, how the shapes change and how people pass through the frame. Sometimes nothing happens for ten minutes. Sometimes twenty. And then, for just a second, everything comes together — the person, the movement, the light and the composition.

These two photos are a perfect example. The first frame is already the photograph I had in mind. But I knew it was missing one thing: a person passing through exactly the right place.

So I waited.

This kind of patience is a big part of my photography and also something I share during my photo tours. Street photography isn’t always about walking around looking for something interesting. Sometimes it’s about finding your frame first, staying exactly where you are and letting Marrakech bring the photograph to you.

I could do this for hours. And quite often, I do.

Thanks for looking.

A GLIMPSE OF WHERE I COME FROM

Before Marrakech, before the busy streets and the Medina, there was the Sahara.

Erg Chigaga is part of where I come from and where I grew up. A place shaped by wind and sand, enormous open spaces, strong sunlight and a way of life that follows a completely different rhythm.

These photographs are personal to me. My uncle sitting for tea, the simple hospitality that is so deeply rooted here, the dunes I have known since childhood, and the quiet everyday scenes of the villages along the way.

Hospitality in the Sahara is something difficult to explain until you experience it. You arrive, you sit down, tea appears, food is shared and time suddenly doesn’t matter very much anymore. It doesn’t need to be arranged or made special. It is simply part of life.

Growing up around this landscape has also shaped the way I photograph. I notice space, people within their surroundings, strong contrasts, small gestures and the way light completely transforms a simple scene.

A little glimpse beyond my Marrakech photo tours — and into the place where my own story started….

Thanks for looking.

The People Behind the Souks

Some of the most meaningful photographs I take in Marrakech are also the quietest ones.

The artisans and small shopkeepers of the Medina are part of its everyday rhythm. Many have spent years, sometimes generations, making and selling their work from these tiny workshops and shops. It isn’t always an easy life. Days are long, business changes, and traditional craftsmanship has to find its place in a city that is changing quickly.

When I photograph here, I never want it to be about walking up, taking a picture and moving on.

I prefer to slow down, observe, talk when the moment allows it, and show genuine interest in the person and their work. When people realize that the camera comes with respect and curiosity, the whole interaction changes. Very often, they open their doors a little wider, show me what they are working on, or simply allow me to stay and share a few minutes of their day.

For me, those encounters are as important as the photographs themselves.

Because behind all the colors, textures and beautiful objects of Marrakech are real people, real work and thousands of everyday stories.

Sweet Traditions, Passed Down

Some places in Marrakech are about much more than food. They carry family stories, memories and traditions from one generation to the next.

This little chebakia workshop is one of those places I always enjoy photographing. Chebakia is such a familiar part of Moroccan life — the dough carefully shaped, fried and covered in honey, with its smell filling the entire space. Especially during Ramadan, it becomes part of almost every Moroccan table.

But what makes this place particularly special to me is the family behind it. The portrait on the wall quietly reminds you of the generation that came before, while today the younger generation continues the work with the same hands-on tradition.

During my photo tours, these are the places I like to enter. Not simply to photograph what Marrakech looks like, but to meet the people behind it and discover the stories, crafts and traditions that continue behind its doors.

Morning Light, Quiet Streets

One of the reasons I always recommend starting my photo tours early is simple: the light.

Before the heat in July and August settles over Marrakech, usually around 8 or 9 in the morning, the city feels different. The streets are quieter, the sky is a deep blue, and the first golden light begins to touch the rooftops, palm trees, and old walls.

I always find myself looking up. That’s often where the most beautiful frames are waiting.

Those peaceful morning hours create the kind of atmosphere that simply can’t be recreated later in the day. And for me, that’s when Marrakech reveals one of its most beautiful sides.

- Faith Beyond Words -

As a photographer, I often find myself witnessing moments of faith that don’t need translation.

A man quietly reading the Qur’an before sunset.
The call to prayer echoing through ancient streets.
The soft golden light touching a minaret at the end of a narrow alley.

I don’t photograph religion to explain it. I photograph the atmosphere it creates—the stillness, the respect, the rhythm that becomes part of everyday life.

Moving around with my camera has taught me that belief looks different around the world, but devotion has a language of its own. Sometimes, all I have to do is observe quietly, respect the moment, and press the shutter at the right time.

Those are often the photographs that stay with me the longest…

Thanks for looking.

~ That Light ~

Marrakech taught me to slow down and observe light differently.

Because the same alley can feel completely different within a few minutes.
A passing shadow, a bicycle entering the frame, the warm evening sun touching the walls for just a second.

Sometimes I stand in one spot for quite a while, simply waiting.
Waiting for someone to walk into the light.
Waiting for shadows to create new shapes on the walls.
Waiting for the scene to feel complete.

In Marrakech, light is never flat.
It moves constantly through the Medina and turns ordinary streets into something cinematic…

Thank your for being here.

The Details Most People Walk Past

Sometimes it’s not the busy streets or the obvious moments that catch my eye.

Sometimes it’s a shop owner quietly watching the day go by.
Sometimes it’s the way his pieces, fabrics, or handmade items catch the afternoon light outside his shop.

These are the moments I’m always searching for in Marrakech—
the quiet details,
the light,
the shadows,
the everyday scenes most people walk past.

Because often, the real soul of this city isn’t shouting.
It’s sitting quietly in the corners… waiting to be seen.

~ Marrakech never looks the same twice ~

The same streets.
The same corners.
The same city.

And still—every time I walk through it, it feels different.

Marrakech never shows itself to me the same way twice.
It changes with the light,
with the time of day,
with the season.

In the morning, I see softness and calm.
At midday, everything feels raw and intense.
And in the evening, the city turns warm… almost cinematic.

I can walk the same path again and again—
and still discover something new every single time.

It’s never about finding new places.
It’s about seeing the same place
in a completely different way.

The moment you don’t plan

Some moments don’t wait for you.

You don’t plan them.
You don’t ask for them.
You don’t get a second chance.

You either see them — or they’re gone.

These were one of those moments.
A simple scene, someone passing by… and suddenly everything aligned for just a second. Movement, light, composition — all happening at once, and then disappearing just as quickly.

That’s what I love about photography in the Medina.
It teaches you to be present. To observe. To anticipate without controlling.

Because the perfect shot is often not the one you prepare —
but the one you almost miss.
