Another round of my ongoing project, La Sottile Linea di Fuoco, is done! After almost a month in the field, it’s time to head back home and begin one of the most important parts of this kind of project: the editing. Working with a mix of video and photography, I’ll start building the structure of the body of work before heading back to continue shooting as soon as possible. A huge thank you to @natgeosociety for the support in making this important and deeply personal project possible. And a special thanks to the entire team @kaityarnall @rstrec @sanauphoto @davidylee for their trust and continued support. Avanti! Keep going! 📸 @massimonicolaci 🚁 @emiliomessinaphotography @canonemeapro #etna #mountetna #volcano #volcanoetna by @massimonicolaci

You know the story: Mount Vesuvius erupts, Pompeii vanishes, thousands perish. But 2,000 years later, history’s most famous disaster is telling us something new. In the cover story of our August issue, out now, we explore how AI and advanced DNA analysis are answering questions archaeologists could once only guess at. A cache of charred scrolls is readable again thanks to a pioneering virtual “unwrapping” technology. Newly excavated toilets at Pompeii have sparked a groundbreaking genomic study of ancient mental health. And 60 skeletons found huddled in a suburban storeroom could upend what historians know about Roman class and gender. Read this tale of Vesuvius by writer Sam Kean @historyschmistory and featuring photographs by @paoloverzone and video by @massimonicolaci at @natgeo #nati̇onalgeographi̇c #coverstory #assignment #pompeii #filming by @massimonicolaci

The first round is done! The #lasottilelineadifuoco project is underway, marking the start of a personal, anthropological, and scientific journey at one of my favorite places in the world: Mount Etna, the majestic Mungibeddu! This volcano has inspired literary giants like Homer and Goethe, ignited creativity in popular and anthropological culture, and serves as an incredible open laboratory for volcanologists and geologists. I am thrilled and proud to work on this project. The journey began two weeks ago and will continue over the coming weeks and months, tracing that subtle line that every Sicilian, and many others, share with this place and its spirit. This profound exploration is possible only with the precious support of @natgeosociety and the entire team that has helped me find my way over the years. My thanks also go to my explorer friends and others who continue to assist in the development, along with the on-field team of @emiliomessinaphotography and @ingvvulcani , and the crucial technical support from @canonemeapro . Thank you, Etna. See you very soon. 📸 All photos taken with #iPhone17Pro 🎥 Videos by @emiliomessinaphotography by @massimonicolaci
The planning, studying, and organizing are done. Now it’s time to get in the field: to photograph, film, hike, and sweat. This dream has come true, and it began with an eruption on Mount Etna! A place that means so much to my past and present. This journey is possible thanks to the crucial support of @natgeosociety and the entire team. I can’t wait to work with an amazing group: volcanologist Raffaele Azzaro and the INGV Sicily team, and my hero @emiliomessinaphotography . With the technical support of Canon Europe @canonemeapro . Stay tuned! Abbiamu! #lasottilelineadifuoco #nationalgeographicsociety #natgeoexplorer by @massimonicolaci
I’m very happy to share my latest work for National Geographic Magazine @natgeo from Naples with my dear @paoloverzone : Vesuvius buried these scrolls, AI is bringing them back. It was an amazing journey into history, technology, light, and human encounters. This project was possible thanks to the support and hard work of an incredible team: @jamesbwellford , @heartattackack , @cosimaam , @itshalleybee , @minutaglio , and Sam Kean. Many thanks to papyrologist Federica Nicolardi and the entire team at the Biblioteca Nazionale di Napoli Federico II.
