JPN pt.1 | Kumano kodo 🐻

Many mossy green steps,

many tall trees,

many giggles.

Jizō Bosatsu statues; Jizō is a beloved Buddhist deity (bodhisattva) known as the guardian of travelers, hikers, and children. “In Japanese tradition, red is believed to ward off illness, demons, and evil spirits. Locals and passing hikers dress the stone statues in red bibs (yodarekake) and hats as an act of merit, thanking Jizō for safety or praying for the protection of children.”

Koguchi 📍the cutest rural mountain town where we had the yummiest curry rice & fresh lemonade after a big day of hiking at the only restaurant that they have, run by a sweet elderly Japanese lady ❤️👵🏻🍱🍛🍋

Stamps along the way were a good time. They kept us motivated. This is at Ogumotori-goe Trailhead, leaving Koguchi, beginning of day two. 💮

💙

There are traditional Japanese poems along the hike engraved in these stone pillars, known historically as kuhi (句碑) or haiku monuments. This one speaks of late blooming cherry blossoms on the mountain path. 🌸

The view from outside Seiganto-ji Temple facing east. The climb was worth the view at the end.

My favourite natural onsen, Kawayu, where we bathed in the natural hot springs & plunged in the Oto River. This is where we began and in my dreams I will be returning here. by @mathildelebouc

Take me back to where the salt kisses
plates placed on tables
To the land of decorative cornerstones and lost in translations
To shutters and open eyes
To where my body felt at home in the hum of the heat

commemorating hues, shapes and moments on 35mm film.

This camera was handed down to me from my auntie, she had it in the 70’s. Guessing it’s seen a lot.
