“Mathieu van der Poel x Richard Mille.” by @matspalinckx
Hi! I’m Mats. 🙋🏻‍♂️ Let me (re)introduce myself in case we haven’t connected yet. My journey in visual storytelling began early. I was just 12 years old, capturing my friends having a blast on the local BMX track. Pure, unadulterated fun. I never imagined it would become my profession... until it did. Ten years ago, I took the plunge, dedicating myself fully to this craft. It’s been a ride of incredible highs and challenging lows, but my passion ultimately became my career. Today, I’m truly living my dream, traveling the world to capture the moments and stories that move me. My ultimate goal is always to encapsulate the raw emotion and genuine passion of the people in front of my lens. It’s a pursuit that constantly drives me, even late into the night. “How can I capture moments in a way that truly resonates and creates a deep connection with the viewer?” This question has become my life’s mission. If this resonates with you, and you’re looking for someone to tell your story, I’m always open to new opportunities and incredibly grateful for every connection made along the way. Let’s create something memorable! 🤝🏻 First picture by @jacobsjasper 🙏🏻 by @matspalinckx
Senne’s Theatre of Dreams. From Bruges and Antwerp to Old Trafford. The biggest stage. It was an honor to produce this campaign for @senne_lammens & @profimanagement. Through the lens of @matspalinckx 🎥 Good luck, Senne. More than just sports. by @matspalinckx

I’ve always avoided on-camera flash. So I put myself in front of the lens to finally figure it out. 📸 I never felt confident using an on-camera flash pointing directly towards the subject, so it was time to test it properly. I don’t like standing in front of a camera, but for learning and trying things out, it’s actually really helpful. I started with composition and style. I wanted a harsh headshot. At first I wore a plain black T-shirt, but the image looked completely flat. Switching to a striped shirt already helped, and adding a jacket on top gave it the extra layer it needed. As for posing: I don’t have any modelling skills, so I had to work with what I had. Not much, haha. 😬 Just one flash and a white wall. Standing close to the wall keeps the background pure white. Want a darker background? Move your subject away from the wall. The light loses power before it hits the wall, so it turns grey. I didn’t want any ambient light sneaking in, so I set my exposure quite dark and turned up the flash to expose properly: Shutter speed: 1/200 Aperture: f/4.0 ISO: 200 A remote trigger made it a lot easier to photograph myself. The edit was simple, because I already knew the style I wanted before I took the shot. It was mainly about making the image pop. I added contrast in the tone curve, while making sure I didn’t lose detail in the highlights and blacks. Then I used a mask to darken the jacket, which felt too light. I also pushed the background as white as possible, so the dark parts create the contrast. That was my test day with on-camera flash. Have you ever tried it, or do you avoid it too? Any questions, drop them below. Happy to help. 😎 by @matspalinckx
