MORGEN - HET DORP x IN PLACE OF WAR - 21:00-04:00 - ENTREE OP DONATIE BASIS

We zien jullie morgen! 🫶

#SundaySoundtrack Autumn has officially arrived. Grey, cold and wet outside. On days like this, the soundtrack matters. So had to pull out Coldcut – Autumn Leaves (The Irresistible Force remix).

Originally released in 1993, @mattblackninja and Jonathan More took Joseph Kosma’s iconic 1945 jazz standard and transformed it into a modern downtempo piece. But it was ambient pioneer @mixmaster.morris , under his Irresistible Force moniker, who stretched it into a sprawling 10-minute masterpiece.

A definite play during early ‘90s chillout rooms and legendary Big Chill sets, it’s a track that slowed down time for our generation. Chilled, yet deeply warm. Some call it a Top10 chillout track of all time, a bit dramatic given how much incredible music is out there, but it’s undoubtedly up there.

A perfect tune for today given the weather and season kicking in.

Our CEO Ruth Daniel is presenting The State of Emergency Saturday 10 October at @barbicancentre as part of @futuresound.io - a live audiovisual performance lecture drawing on frontline experiences from around the world, asking what music, art and culture can do in a time of multiple crises, and how creativity can become a force for hope, connection and action.

A collaboration with artist Faabia Tekena-Sekibo and directed by Matt Black (Coldcut/Ninja Tune), see The State of Emergency this weekend 👀

Ticket link in our bio.

“I got a bit bored of presenting keynote style. Then I saw Laurie Anderson perform her Republic of Love in Reykjavik, and I thought: I want to try something like that.

So I reached out to my friend Matt Black of Coldcut and Ninja Tune. He wasn’t able to jump in as a collaborator, but he introduced me to Faabia Tekena-Sekibo, a brilliant young artist based in London. We got talking, and we’ve since built something together that I’m very nervous about and also really proud of.

It’s called The State of Emergency, a live audiovisual performance lecture in four parts. It’s a talk about the world we’re living in right now, and how the arts can be a powerful response to the injustices of our times, told through sound, film, conversation and live performance. We’re channelling our full inner Laurie Anderson.

It premieres this Saturday 10 October in Cinema 1 at the Barbican, in the morning session of The Future Is Sound. I can’t wait to share it and see how the audience responds.

Working with Faabia on something so different from anything I’ve done before has been a joy. Thank you to Matt, and to Jimmy Kyriacou and the whole Future Is Sound team for giving us the space.” - Ruth Daniel, In Place of War CEO
