Punt Protection: Fast Hands, Fast Eyes, Fast Feet. Strike & Redirect! Long Snappers, As a snapping coach, helping you with blocking and protection transition, will always be a big emphasis. No matter what level you are at. This is one of my favorite aspects of coaching the snapping position. Being an anchor in protection sets you apart from the pack. Fast Hands : throw your fast ball Fast Eyes: eyes quick to your gap Fast Feet : let your feet follow what your eyes see Strike : strike the rusher and fight pressure with pressure Redirect : get rusher off his track and widen the pocket STAY READY 🤟 #nfl #longsnapper #longsnapping #longsnappingcoach #specialteams #stayready by @mattovertonlongsnapping

Perfect Laces : 12 o’clock Long snappers, I get asked often on how to get better on snapping perfect laces on short snaps. Over the course of my career, I have made certain changes (grip and landmarks) that have helped me become more consistent on short snaps to maintain a standard of perfect laces. The biggest factor in it all is building consistency with your holder. Dial in your landmark from where you start your snap to where the holder catches it and being very deliberate/consistent on throwing your same fast ball every time! Finding the grip, meaning are you snapping while gripping laces or gripping a panel of the ball. For me I grip a panel and laces face 9 o’clock. I found this grip to be best for me with getting the correct ball rotations to hit perfect laces at 8 yards. You and your holder must repeatedly do the same thing over and over again to build that continuity. That connection, continuity and consistency gives your kicker confidence on each rep. In this rep with @tylongkicking, we knew our distance and repped it over and over throughout the week. Ty and I had such a great relationship and we knew how to make slight adjustments on the sideline or in the game that would help us stay on track for laces and operation time. The biggest challenge I see most young snappers deal with is they throw different snaps in warm ups and on the sideline to when they snap in games. In my opinion, this is a confidence and trust issue. Many snappers throw darts on air but once the bullets start flying, they snap trying not to screw up and often don’t fall back on their preparation. This leads to snapping slower snaps or snaps that fall out of the strike zone. The key to perfect laces is knowing your distance from start to finish, throw your fastball every time and be confident in yourself when you’re in the game. STAY READY 🤟 by @mattovertonlongsnapping

Fast Eyes + Blocking Transition Drill When in a true Pro Style scheme where blocking is required, the transition into protection is quick. There is little to no time to watch the ball in your release. This is a very challenging adjustment when you've been aclimated to a free release scheme or when you arent required to be a viable part of blocking. Over the years, Ive utilized short yard drills to work on transition quickness. Being quick and smooth in transition also requires remaining consistent and accurate with your snaps. I use these drills at 7-10 yards so that I can identify where my eyes get up in relation to ball flight, all while delivering an accurate snap. 7 yards is really short but it is a great bench mark to hit when pushing yourself to improve. I like to see my eyes up at 7 yards and at 10 yards gaining depth with my steps. As I pinpoint a target at these distances, I know hitting that target will get to the punter at 15 yards. I am still throwing my same fast ball at th shorter distances and have the mindset of throwing the snap thru it and not just at it. The fast ball never changes no matter the distance. I highly recommend drills like these on lighter days throught the season where you can really drill snap, transition and footwork to a stationary target. Wheh you film yourself, look at the small details. Release, ball rotation, body mechanics and keep ironing out the little things. Correcting the little things overtime create a bigger and lasting impact. STAY READY🤟 by @mattovertonlongsnapping

Jax Nichols @_jaxn_66 class of 2028 6’6” 225 OL/DE/LS It was a pleasure having Jax in town for a couples days. We spent 2 days refining small details on his grip, alignment and began working on blocking transition. As a starting offensive tackle, I wanted him to learn how to block and utilize his size, length and blocking experience to his advantage. Even though he is a free release snapper, adding blocking ability to his toolbox, will only help him in recruiting. His size and athleticism alone will get the attention of coaches but as a solid, blocking snapper, this will raise his stock. With his tall and long frame, we really focused on his leverage and footwork. I want him to distinguish the difference between a kick slide technique used as a tackle to more of a balanced technique for snapping. In one session alone, he was able to adapt to blocking transition very well. As he continues to refine his snap, add some more velocity, be fluid and confident in blocking, I believe he will be a top snapper in the 2028 class. Thank you to Jax and his family for making the trip from Tennessee to Indiana. It was great having him here and love seeing his improvement over the past 6 months. Keep going! Finding Your Perfect Laces I’m asked often “how can I snap perfect laces?” Here are the keys to perfect laces and building consistency. Perfect laces come down to these components, Distance and Speed. The distance between the start of the ball and where the holder catches the snap must be consistent and you must throw your fast ball each time. Different distances matched with faster/slower snaps will affect the result of the lace location. In the video, notice I grip the ball with laces facing roughly 10 o’clock. I had to make this adjustment in my career to find consistency in the lace location. One struggle I did have early on with this particular adjustment was gaining a tight spiral while not gripping the laces like I do on punt snaps. The second key was finding my distance. With the total revolution/spin of my snap, I found that a close to exact 8 yard distance was where I found very consistent lace location. Once I keyed in my distance, grip and snap revolution (about 2 1/2 rotations) I worked diligently with my holders. Another benefit of identifying these keys are the in game adjustments that you can make without overthinking it all. The reality is that there are factors that come into play that may affect the operation. Weather, field conditions, spotting of the kickers spot (especially on grass fields) and perhaps a wet ball. Even if the laces weren’t perfect, the holder will still receive a consistent snap and make very minor adjustments for the hold. Overall, find your distance, snap the same ball and work on your op and timing diligently. The better the snap, the better the hold, the better the results. Bye Week Prep @46hall_ @stetsonfootball Great having Gavin Hall in town during his bye week. We spent the afternoon working on blocking transition, footwork and leverage. We finished with a great and challenging drill, the long arm anchor drill. Gavin adapted very well in it. This drill is very beneficial when working on pad level and being able to anchor quickly against a bull rush. Thank you Gavin for coming back for more work! Go be great and finish the rest of the season strong! STAY READY 🤟 by @mattovertonlongsnapping
