On the last slide, a scar from the shoot when I accidentally slammed the U-Haul door on the back of my hand. Sometimes, when I’m bored riding the subway, I’ll stare at it and smile :) by @mattpifko_

A man confronts his one-night stand after catching him in a white lie. “Circle the Block,” directed by Matthew Pifko (@mattpifko_) and shot by Meagan Wachtel (@meagantheepisces) on ALEXA Mini LF with DNA primes.

“For ‘Circle the Block,’ I was incredibly fortunate to have the support of the ARRI Rental team, which allowed us to shoot on the ARRI ALEXA Mini LF paired with the DNA primes. For a story exploring queer hookup culture, I was drawn to the way the format could capture skin texture in such beautiful detail, while the DNA primes gave us the speed to shoot wide open, creating intimate portraits that isolated our subjects from their surroundings. I wanted the images to have a hazy, morning-after quality, where the textures of skin and the closeness between characters became central to the visual language. I was especially drawn to the lenses’ gorgeous focus falloff in our autumn exteriors, which gave the backgrounds a beautiful swirl and a dreamlike quality that complemented some of the film’s most emotionally intimate moments.

“Our aim with this film was to capture our world, just ever so slightly heightened—‘subjective reality’, as we called it in the development process. We wanted to feel impossibly close to our subjects, uncomfortably intimate. It needed to feel grounded in the tactile discomfort of an overwhelming cityscape, yet we wanted to be able to float out of that when the world of ‘what-if’ fantasy carried our characters away in the park. ARRI gave us the tools with their DNA lenses to amplify every blush and wince on our actors’ faces, to paint a world both lovely and immediate.” - Matthew Pifko, Director by @mattpifko_

Thanks for giving me permission to see the world through eyes wide open. For teaching me how to see for the second time, rather.

If only all of us could stare at the unknowable with such unblinking bravery as you have. It’s not enough to be an observer but it is also the most important thing you can possibly do, just to watch—to testify that it was all there and there was no way to describe it, but it was there nonetheless.

I tell everyone I know about how David’s films cracked open my universe at a crucial crossroads of adolescence and recalibrated me at a cellular level, setting me on my path I continue to walk. Celluloid is doomed to disintegrate and the internet will die too one day, but I am very grateful we get to hold onto his ghost for a while longer from the gifts he has given us. It’s strange that a person who’s made me feel less lonely at my lowest is now an absence. I hope that the former feeling overwhelms the latter, and that love stretches on forever and ever alongside the darkness by @mattpifko_
