Valérie Lemercier. To be pure of heart is to be blessed; an act of love, protected by order of Susan Sontag's ‘Notes on 'Camp.’

But EGADS, what an astoundingly odd motion picture! A bright bitten penny, both hamstrung and saved by our writer-director-star’s most novel idea: that she at 57 should play a 12 year old, not merely for Quebecian clooning, but to bridge the queasy age gap at the center of one of pop divadom’s most baffling love stories.

Coupled with the lack of Celine songs, Valerie as Martin Short as Gilda Radner doing secret pedophile handshakes with non-René explodes the comfortable music biopic in ways more similar to Sofia Coppola’s haunting Priscilla.

And yet, this is not its actual intent - it indeed wants to be its tacked-on subtitle, The Voice of Love. Valerie is not Orson Welles, go figure, she cannot do it all. The back half suffers from a wishy washy timeline and more traditional tropes of an icon, tho l appreciate an unexpected Rufus Wainwright needle drop.

But somewhere in her pride and pain of rejection from her idol, she completes the picture anyway as the alter ego she always was: Aline Dieu, our real-life Jackie Jormp-Jomp, and I think cinema is all the better for this passionate crash-out.
