Through photography, sculpture, archival materials and editorial research, Maximiliano Tineo ( @maxitineo ) explores the enduring traces of colonialism and extractivism across South America.
El Rey Blanco takes as its starting point a 16th-century Spanish colonial legend that spoke of a kingdom ruled from a mountain made entirely of silver. This myth fueled the conquest and exploitation of the continent’s resources, with Cerro Potosí becoming one of its most powerful symbols.
Five centuries later, the project draws a connection between that history and the present through the Lithium Triangle - spanning Bolivia, Argentina and Chile - where a new extractive rush once again places natural resources at the center of global economic and geopolitical interests.
Blending documentary aesthetics with an oneiric dimension, El Rey Blanco brings past and present into dialogue, questioning how colonial logics continue to shape territories, bodies and the images we produce about them.

A través de la fotografía, la escultura, el archivo y la investigación, Maximiliano Tineo ( @maxitineo ) explora las huellas que el colonialismo y el extractivismo continúan dejando sobre América del Sur.
El Rey Blanco toma como punto de partida una antigua leyenda colonial del siglo XVI que prometía la existencia de un reino gobernado desde una montaña de plata. Ese imaginario impulsó la conquista y la explotación de los recursos del continente, con el Cerro Potosí como uno de sus símbolos más contundentes.
Cinco siglos después, el proyecto conecta esa historia con el presente a través del Triángulo del Litio, entre Bolivia, Argentina y Chile, donde una nueva fiebre extractiva vuelve a situar los recursos naturales en el centro de disputas económicas y geopolíticas.
Con una estética documental atravesada por una dimensión onírica, El Rey Blanco pone en diálogo pasado y presente para preguntarse qué formas adopta hoy la maquinaria colonial y cómo esas lógicas siguen moldeando los territorios, los cuerpos y las imágenes. by @mrofoundation

Tout au long du festival, découvrez les 24 projets présentés cette année à Circulation(s) à travers une image selectionnée et décryptée par les artistes. L’occasion de découvrir plus en détail leurs univers et d’en apprendre plus sur leurs oeuvres et leurs démarches.

« Et je n’ai pas pu penser à autre chose qu’à une sorte d’irréalisme magique qui m’aurait donné la bienvenue à Potosi à ce moment là, pour pouvoir parler de l’histoire de cette montagne et de la région. ». Maximiliano Tineo dévoile la signification qui se cache derrière une image de son projet « El Rey Blanco ». Une photographie mystérieuse, qui ramène l’artiste à un moment fort et significatif de son projet.

«And I couldn’t think of anything but a kind of magical irrealism that would have welcomed me to Potosi at that moment, to be able to talk about the history of this mountain and the region.». Maximiliano Tineo reveals the meaning behind an image from his project «El Rey Blanco». A mysterious photograph that takes the artist back to an important and significant momentof his project.

Maximilliano Tineo’s (@maxitineo) project, “El Rey Blanco” (The White King) performs a photographic juxtaposition comparing the 16th century rush for silver resources by foreign interests with the current battle underway for the supply of scarce lithium found in the geographic triangle touching southern Bolivia, northern Chile and Argentina.

Lithium has critical industrial applications as it is an essential product used in powering the batteries that run your smart phones, cameras, cars and data centers for AI.

Tineo’s project takes one back and forth between the centuries of plunder with a sly take on El Rey Blanco,a mythical king and a fitting dual symbol for the silver and lithium that foment foreign exploitation.

Tineo notes, “With a documentary approach imbued with a strong dreamlike component, through photography, sculpture, and archival material, I propose a parallel between these two triangular shapes and question the continuity of extractive machinery and its human, economic, and environmental consequences, exploring how this narrative continues to shape memory and territory.”

“El Rey Blanco” es un proyecto de Maximiliano Tineo que parte de una leyenda de 1526, vinculada a la llegada de los primeros españoles al Cono Sur, para establecer un paralelismo contundente: la explotación histórica del Cerro Rico de Potosí y la actual extracción del litio en el llamado “triángulo del litio”, entre Bolivia, Chile y Argentina.

El proyecto será publicado en marzo y se exhibirá en el marco del Festival Circulations, en el Centquatre (104) de París, cerca de La Villette y del Canal de l’Ourcq.
