You do not need to be perfect to be successful.

I was extremely disappointed to recently find images of myself from when I was only 13 and 14 years old had appeared to have been edited and used as thumbnails on youtube videos of me competing. Without my permission. I’m here to say I do not stand behind this inauthentic representation of myself. When I saw these images my first thought was “something’s not right.” I know my body better than anyone, and I know what it’s limitations and strengths are. and so I watched the videos and took screenshots to compare, just to be sure. These side by side comparisons show that these images were very likely edited to change the shape of my legs and feet. The first slide is an unedited photo of my own from me competing a variation from Grand Pas Classique. The second is a Grand Pas Classique screenshot from the same performance of the photo thumbnail used. And the third is the screenshot from the video of me competing a variation from Satanella next to the thumbnail. they’re from different shows, (I’m not wearing all of my costume in the video for some reason) ,but were in the same year, and you can absolutely see what my body was capable of at the time. It saddens me deeply that someone else felt the need to make my facility more exaggerated as if it wasn’t good enough. I’m livid that someone thought it was okay to edit the body of a CHILD. And I hate that these people seem to feel the need to show other young and impressionable minds that this is the image of beauty and success and anything less isn’t. Caption continued on the next slide. ->

I absolutely struggled with body dysmorphia as a young woman. I think back to how hard I worked to prepare for these competitions and how much I obsessed about whether or not I could straighten my knees enough or point my feet hard enough. I stretched my feet incessantly, rolled and tucked my ballet uniform so my legs looked longer and my butt looked smaller, and edited photos of myself very subtly hoping they would be believable. I’ve done a lot of healing and living since then and I am very comfortable with what my body does and looks like. I think I can say now that the body I was by @maxrichtermoves
