How’s this for book synchronicity? I read a biography of Paul Bowles while on vacation in August. Shopped it off my own bookshelf, where it has sat for years, and to be honest I don’t even know where it came from — I haven’t read or seen the film The Sheltering Sky, arguably what he’s most famous for. The bio was fascinating. Loved it.

Once finished, I decided to stick to the genre, after finding a memoir by Alexandra Fuller in a neighbourhood Little Free Library. I enjoyed her two earlier memoirs about growing up on farms in Southern Africa with her eccentric/alcoholic British parents, especially Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, so was eager to dive in, to learn about her life in Wyoming after marrying an American.

And then I came across this line, as she described the unravelling of her marriage: “Charlie’s low slung leather sofa faced my canvas-covered … sofa, over the coffee table on which there was a buffer zone of shared interests, a book of Lee Miller’s war photography; a biography of Paul Bowles …” I gasped.
Anyway. Weird. by @mcpublic

With my nephew Hunter, who looks so much like my dad that I get a bit sad when I see him, then immediately happy. by @mcpublic

“If I could save time in a bottle” — how appropriate that Jim Croce’s song was top of the charts the year my sister was born, 50 years ago. What a gift I’ve been given, growing up with Erin in a happy family, with masses of aunts, uncles and cousins. From being mortified of my rambunctious little sister falling into the fountain at Bramalea City Centre to bursting with pride at her professional success and how well she and Martin have raised their boys, I realize how lucky each of us are to have the other in our life. There is a very unique bond between sisters and I’m the luckier to have such a smart, loving, FUNNY friend for life; one with a memory like a steel trap and who knows how to turn any gathering into a great craic. Happy Birthday Erin! Love you!

Though I don’t know why I never got the “wear your prettiest dress” memo for that photo with my mom and my baby sister. Hmm. by @mcpublic

This took me places I didn’t expect. It’s excellent. Thanks @michaela_in_canada for the tip. by @mcpublic
