Join us at the opening of In Communion, next Wednesday October 21 from 5-6pm at Keffer Memorial Chapel (75 University Ave W, Waterloo).

In Communion is a group exhibit rooted in call and response engagement with needlepoint kneelers designed by Nancy-Lou Patterson c.1992 and stitched by a community of women in Lutheran congregations.

My artwork, called “see I am doing a new thing”, responds to the seasonal, elemental, and textual systems of meaning stitched into the kneelers.

Thanks to @catherine_mellinger for curating In Communion, inviting this call and response. 🧵🪡 by @media___trix

Yesterday was a homecoming, a dream come true - reading poetry in a clearing, meeting other writers, wandering around a magical little town, and riding the tailgate of a tiny truck!

I’m deeply honoured to have won the Poetry section of Eden Mills Writers’ Festival’s Read At The Fringe Literary Contest for my poem, Paradise.

That poem is about many things; many of them are difficult to read or write down let alone to bear in a body or bear witness to. Among them, however, is a quiet yet incandescent hope for remediation and regeneration.

Thank you @emwritersfestival for hosting us all so beautifully and for celebrating my writing, it means so very much. Congratulations to the other winners, David Jensen (fiction) and Catherine Lee (non-fiction), and to everyone who picks up a pen today to share their stories. ✍️ by @media___trix

crying in my studio 💘

These love tokens were made by convicts and given to their dear ones as mementos. Something to hold onto, to see, to feel, and to be connected through wherever in the world they may be.

One of my family members, Matthew, was transported from Ireland to Australia in 1828 for the crime of cow stealing. The ship, the Mangles, was built in India by a company that bears the name of another part of my family. It was used for penal transportation and British East India Company trade.

Sitting here now, I wonder if Matthew left any tokens or mementos behind, especially for his daughter. He and his wife lived out the rest of their days in New South Wales, while his daughter remained in Ireland and eventually immigrated to Canada.

These stories of love and loss (as Sunder John Boopalan calls them) are so intimately intertwined with histories of colonization and empire. Why did Matthew steal a cow? Why was he sent to Australia? Why did we leave Ireland?

On some of the coins in this collection you can even see a head of state on one side and a love note on the other.

These tokens are just a few of 315 total in the National Museum of Australia’s collection of Convict Tokens.
