🇬🇧 Rebirth 🌿🏰 Rebirth takes a simple idea—placing tiles to rebuild a devastated land—and turns it into a surprisingly tactical contest for territory and influence. Set in a future where civilization is being rebuilt in harmony with nature, players lead ancient clans through the restoration of Scotland, competing for control of castles and the most valuable areas. What I really like about it is how much tension comes from such a straightforward action: where to place your next tile. Every placement can strengthen your position, interfere with an opponent’s plans, complete an area or create an opportunity for future scoring. As the board fills, the available spaces become increasingly valuable, making the final turns particularly tight. The result is a clean and elegant eurogame that doesn’t need a huge ruleset to create meaningful interaction. Rebirth is a great example of how tile placement and area control can work together to produce a game that’s easy to understand but difficult to master. 📌 Publisher: Mighty Boards 📅 Year: 2024 🎲 Players: 2–4 ⏳ Playing Time: 45–60 min 🎨 Designer: Reiner Knizia ⚙️ Main mechanics: Area Majority / Influence, Contracts, End Game Bonuses, Hexagon Grid, Tile Placement by @meeplelayer
🇬🇧 Queen Alice ♟️🍵 Step through the looking glass and enter a world where chess pieces, tea and engine building come together in a surprisingly intricate Eurogame. The heart of Queen Alice is its clever “Chess-building” system. Your chess pieces determine how you activate actions, while the cards you acquire gradually make those actions more powerful. Every move feels like a small puzzle: positioning, resources, cards and timing all need to work together. And then there is the race for Alice’s crown. Will she become the White Queen, the Red Queen, or perhaps both? Your decisions throughout the game influence that outcome, creating another layer of competition on top of the engine you are building. It has a wonderfully unusual combination of theme and mechanisms, and the chess-inspired action system gives Queen Alice a personality of its own. Definitely one for players who enjoy heavier Euros with interconnected decisions and plenty to explore. 🇬🇧 Rebirth II 🌱🏛️ I had the chance to play the prototype at SPIEL Essen, and what stood out to me was how more strategic and interactive it feels compared to the original. Designed by Reiner Knizia, Rebirth II keeps the elegant tile-placement system but introduces a new city-state system that makes competition for influence even more important. Every placement can affect your plans and your opponents’, so choosing where to build becomes a much more tactical decision. The game features two standalone maps: Greece, where exploration lets players modify the landscape and compete for control of city-states, and Italy, where each city-state offers unique powers and monasteries grant one-time blessings. It feels like a step toward a civilization game, with more ways to shape the board, contest territories and react to other players — while keeping the accessible rules and clean design that make Rebirth so appealing. 🇬🇧 Kalypso 🌊🏚️ The world is underwater, and humanity must learn to survive on floating settlements. In Kalypso, you salvage materials from the ocean to build structures, grow food and keep your survivors alive. Smart tile placement is essential: grouping matching materials unlocks buildings and powerful bonus actions. What I find particularly interesting is the flexibility. You can play competitively, cooperatively or solo, with changing weather conditions and objectives that keep every game challenging. A survival-themed tile-laying game with an unusual setting and plenty of spatial puzzles! Publisher: @insideupgames Year: 2026 Players: 1–4 Playing Time: 45–60 min Age: 14+ Designer: Gilles Turbide Mechanisms: Closed Drafting; Contracts; Cooperative Game; Pattern Building; Tile Placement; Variable Setup; Solo Mode by @meeplelayer
🇬🇧 Terrorscape 🔪🏚️ A haunted mansion, a relentless killer and a group of survivors trying to make it out alive. In Terrorscape, one player becomes the killer while everyone else works together to escape. Survivors must search for five keys or repair a radio to call for help, all while avoiding noise that could reveal their location. What makes the game so tense is its asymmetric gameplay. The survivors rely on cooperation, deduction and careful movement, while the killer hunts them using sounds, special abilities and fear. Every decision matters, and even a small mistake can turn a quiet search into a deadly chase. With different killers and survivors, every match brings new challenges. A fantastic choice for anyone who enjoys horror, hidden movement and intense one-versus-many experiences. 🇬🇧 September gaming recap 🎲 September was a busy one at the table. A good mix of old favorites, new games, heavier strategy, lighter sessions and a few games that surprised me along the way. Some came back to the table more than once, while others were one-and-done… at least for now. From managing ports and building empires to exploring strange worlds, racing, bluffing and causing a little chaos, there was plenty of variety this month. And honestly, that’s one of my favorite things about this hobby — every game brings a completely different kind of night. 🎲 by @meeplelayer
🇬🇧 GODŌ: The Five Paths 🧘‍♂️🌿 A quiet journey toward enlightenment, where every step comes with a price. In GODŌ, players take on the role of monks seeking mastery of five virtues: Kindness, Righteousness, Respect, Wisdom and Trust. The temple is built as you play, with triangular tiles creating an ever-changing network of paths. The most interesting idea is that movement itself requires sacrifice. To travel along a path, you must spend the corresponding virtue from your personal journal. Once a virtue is mastered, its paths become free to travel. That creates a fascinating push and pull: you need to spend your virtues to move around the temple, but you also need those same virtues to achieve mastery and win. The modular board makes every game develop differently, while the shared paths mean that where you place a tile can affect everyone at the table. It’s a small game with a very clean concept, but there is plenty to think about in how you build and navigate the temple.
