Meet Me: A Love Letter to Genge Nov 14
POSTS STORIES REELS
Weโ€™re back with another edition of Meet Me, and this time weโ€™re paying tribute to the sounds that shaped a generation. From the early days of Genge and its hip-hop and dancehall influences, through Gengetone and the sounds weโ€™re calling Arbantone today weโ€™re celebrating the music, the artists, the culture and the evolution of Kenyan urban music. ๐Ÿ“… 14th November ๐Ÿ“ Zahabu ๐Ÿ•— 8PM till late ๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ KES 800 Ten days to go! Get ready to dance to the sounds that raised us. For our first editorial contribution to Meet Me: A Love Letter to Genge, weโ€™re excited to introduce Tela Wangeci ( @priestess_telzzzzzz ), our co-curator and writer for this edition. In her article, โ€œWas Gengetone Even Dead?โ€, Tela challenges the way we talk about the rise and fall of musical genres, asking us to reconsider how quickly we declare sounds dead, forgotten or irrelevant. From Genge to Gengetone and Arbantone, she explores the continuities, cultural contributions and industry structures that shape Kenyan urban music. Rather than treating each new sound as the death of the one before it, what if we started looking at them as part of an ongoing conversation? Read Telaโ€™s piece and join us as we revisit, celebrate and interrogate the sounds that have shaped our musical landscape. Meet Me: A Love Letter to Genge. MEET ME: A LOVE LETTER TO GENGE ๐Ÿ’Œ The love letters continue! For our 2nd love letter, weโ€™re tracing the sounds, stories and influences that shaped Nairobiโ€™s urban music. Weโ€™re writing a love letter to Genge, its influences and the genres it influenced. A celebration of the music we love, the artists who gave it a voice, and the generations that keep reinventing the sound. Meet Me on the dancefloor for some Genge, Kapuka, Hiphop, Dancehall, Gengetone and Arbantone. 14 November ๐Ÿ’Œ Tickets will be live from 21st October ๐ŸŽซ #Genge #Kapuka #Gengetone #Arbantone #loveletter by @meetme.ke

Mugithi-Benga Night went like this... It was a beautiful journey through the evolution of Kikuyu pop music. From old school Benga by the legend #JosephKamaru to Kikuyu Funk by Dr. Michuki. "Ciku" is our new favourite funk song btw. Halafu Njoroge who I met that same day played mugithi live on his guitar while I supported him with drumbeats. What a nice touch to the DJ night. And @chairkicker00 followed with a fun 2-hour Mugithi set honoring the late and great #SalimJunior. After playing Benga in different places like @zahabu.nbo and @chronos_nairobi , I've realized representation is super important. So my final set featured #Benga from different communities in Kenya - Luo, Luhya, Kisii, Kamba, Meru and Kalenjin. And all of them were bangers! Give thanks to @meetme.ke for curating the first mugithi-benga party at The Mall, and probably Westy! @chill.its_kimemia for the Kikuyu music recommendations through his Substack. And being the coolest hypeman ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ Would you like to hear more #mugithi and benga music in your favourite spaces? ๐ŸŽธ by @meetme.ke
