Hello! My name is Dr. Melissa Gonzalez 👋🏽

I am a psychiatry resident passionate about mentorship and helping other first gen students navigate their premed journey or medical school years. I started this page when I was applying to medical school in 2019 because I rarely saw someone with my background share about their premed journey. More importantly, I never saw anyone talk about how to go to medical school with a low GPA.

Over the last 5.5 years, I’ve also shared about my life and the people I love. I hope to continue to share because there is so much more to my life than my career. For example, over the last 11 years I’ve dreamt a lot about writing children’s books. There was a point where I considered pursuing a career in art history or fashion. I love going to coffee shops and drinking a yummy latte. Lastly, my parents and fiancé Jake are my rocks and I wouldn’t be here without them. 🫶🏼

Thanks for following along 🤍

Feeling so lucky to be part of this residency class 💜

This was from a few weeks ago, but with recruitment season underway, I thought I’d share a little reminder that where you train can shape your experience in ways that go far beyond medicine.

Residency is challenging, and the people you go through it with can make all the difference. I’m so grateful for co-residents who show up for one another, celebrate the little things, and make the hard days a little lighter.

To everyone going through the residency application process, I hope you find a place where you feel supported, encouraged, and excited to grow. 🫶🏼

The future of psychiatry is bright ✨🧠 by @melissagonzalezmd

AD | As a first-gen premed, I had to figure out so much of the medical school application process on my own.

One thing I’ve learned along the way? There isn’t just one way to become a doctor, and the best path is the one that aligns with your goals, learning style, and the kind of support you need to succeed.

That’s why I’m partnering with @aucmed_edu to highlight the importance of exploring all of your options when choosing a medical school. From faculty mentorship to hands-on clinical experiences, there are so many factors worth considering beyond a school’s name or location.

To first-gen premeds: you belong in medicine, and you deserve to make informed decisions about your future.

As this page has grown into something I never really expected, I’ve found myself wondering more and more about what to share and what to keep to myself.

Sometimes I wonder if I should share less of my personal life with the world. Where is the line between being a physician and being a person who happens to be one?

I’m still figuring that out. But I try to remind myself that we’re human, too. We have hobbies, interests, bad habits (online shopping 😅), messy days, big feelings, and lives outside of our jobs. We’re allowed to have fun, make mistakes, try new things, and be more than the title we worked so hard to earn.

Becoming a doctor changed my life, but it didn’t erase the other parts of me. And I hope it never does.

A gentle reminder to myself and to anyone who needs it: never let becoming a doctor convince you that you’re not human. 🤍 by @melissagonzalezmd

I love mentorship because without it, I wouldn’t be where I am today. This page was started in 2019 when I was applying to medical school. I never saw anybody share their experience applying to medical school as a first generation student and with a low GPA. Once I started to get medical school interview invitations I started to have hope that I had a chance. I decided to share that hope with others. Seven years later, I still love sharing my experience in hopes it will help at least one more person to keep on this journey even when it may seem impossible. Here for you!

Couldn’t pass up on this video trend 🤣

Did you know sleep has a very significant impact on our mood?

In my depression clinic, we ask about sleep every visit and even refer to sleep medicine when we are concerned about sleep disorders like obstructive sleep apnea. The first line treatment for insomnia is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTi). It helps improve sleep by addressing the thoughts and behaviors that keep us awake. By improving sleep quality and consistency, CBT-I can also help regulate mood, reduce anxiety, and improve emotional resilience.

Do you have questions about sleep? 😴

AD | One thing I wish I had done earlier in residency is look at what kinds of opportunities are actually out there, even before I was ready to apply.

When I learned about @beginlyhealth‘s mission to share an easier, lower-pressure way to start exploring your options, I immediately signed up. Their new app makes it even easier to browse opportunities anonymously, swipe through positions that interest you, and save ones you might want to revisit when you’re further along in training.

I especially like that you don’t have to be actively job hunting to use it. Sometimes just seeing what’s available can help you start thinking about what you actually want after training: location, practice setting, type of role, salary, and everything in between.

If you’re a resident, fellow, or physician starting to think about your next step, download the Beginly Health app and start exploring!

This was such a fun video to make. Looking at all of my baby photos was very sentimental. I was always encouraged to dream big and work hard. It’s amazing to see that little girl and think of how far she has come: growing up living in a garage and now working as a doctor at Stanford. I am so grateful. 🥹
