#ArtistSpotlight: Andrew Milad has carved out a distinct space within Cairo’s contemporary jazz landscape by bridging Western traditions with local street sounds. Beginning his journey on the keys at age eight, Milad initially immersed himself in classical canon before finding inspiration in regional jazz figures like Ahmed Nazmi and Tarek Yamani, using their influence to reshape jazz into an adaptable vehicle for a local voice. Fascinated by the unconventional techniques of Egyptian folk keyboardists, Milad began integrating synthesizers and Shaabi grooves into his work, bypassing traditional instruments like the oud and qanun to build an entirely new sonic palette with his trio. In this episode of Artist Spotlight, we speak with Andrew Milad about his debut album ‘Sultan', tracing his evolution from classical piano studies to the creation of 'Mahrajazz' - a track that bridges Cairo’s Shaabi energy and modern jazz improvisation without belonging fully to either. For more noise-making people, places and movements from across the region, go to www.scenenoise.com (link in bio), or download the #SceneNow app.

About a month ago, I had the opportunity to talk with Ibrahim Tolba (@therealtolba), the founder of Memphis Records (@memphis.records), an independent label out of Cairo who specialize in producing artists from not only Egypt but the wider Middle East/North African region. The label doesn't stick to one or two genres but operates under three channels: indie/folk, alt-pop/alternative & jazz fusion/progressive. It's common for Memphis musicians to blend some of these categories together as well. Tolba and Memphis Records put the artist first; the musician will have majority ownership of their masters and receive support by the label to help them achieve whatever it is they set out to do. It's a model that isn't too common these days but Tolba does this out of passion for music and love for his local music scene. Any revenue generated goes back into the label. The ultimate goal is to reach as wide an audience as possible. by @memphis.records

We’re very excited for our first Music Artwork Design workshop, led by artist and designer Fady Wilson. This workshop is in collaboration with Memphis Records, who will provide us with music tracks to design covers for during the session—by translating the sounds and our emotional response to them into innovative, personal visual elements. 📅 Friday, December 19, 2025, from 2 to 8 PM 📍 At Saad The Studio in Maadi. Book your spot through the link in our bio — very few spots left. by @memphis.records
A grain-heavy photograph of a small child posing with a cigarette is the first thing that halts you, floating on a screen before you even press play on FHMY’s The World You Grew Up In No Longer Exists. A friend sent me the album in 2025 with a simple description: “Egyptian shoegaze.” The image lingered longer than the tag. It scratched at something half-buried, summoning a nostalgia that wasn't even mine. by @memphis.records
