These sharply lighter patches happen when melanocytes, the cells that produce skin pigment, are lost.

And here’s something many people don’t know: repigmentation can sometimes begin around hair follicles, appearing as tiny spots of returning pigment.

But vitiligo treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some patients pursue repigmentation, while people with very extensive vitiligo may consider depigmentation therapy, such as monobenzone, to create a more uniform skin tone.

The right approach depends on your skin, the extent and activity of your vitiligo.

Those changes in color are not necessarily scars.

When psoriasis inflammation clears, lighter or darker patches may remain.

They can be part of the skin’s healing process and may gradually fade over time, sometimes taking months.

If you notice persistent light or dark patches, don’t assume it’s “just pigmentation.” Getting the right diagnosis is the first step toward the right treatment.
