Instant composition conducting, which is based on Butch Morris' method of hand sign conducting called Conduction, was developed by Michael Fischer into a praxis that follows certain principles: 1. Absolute ad hoc creation—on the part of both the ensemble and the conductor; there are no prepared or agreed-upon modules/designs. 2. No rehearsals, only a short try-out of the hand signs before the concert begins. 3. the ensemble is grouped according to instruments, 4. the few (approx. 20) hand signs are used sparingly, 5. the instant compositions have long, narrative progressions of 35–50 minutes, 6. each concert features a new ensemble constellation and usually includes at least one new musician. The VIO has performed at the legendary Moers Festival for Jazz and Improvised Music, has been guest at Wien Modern, the Artacts-Festival for Improvised Music and Jazz, Porgy & Bess, Brut Wien, or Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab, Vienna Art Week Festival, and others. The VIENNA IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA was founded by Michael Fischer in 2004; it is one of the earliest and most continuously active improvisation orchestras in the world. The color-ray-saxophone was built after an idea I had some years ago in collaboration with Christoph Freidhöfer (Vinylograph) with whom I could realise an absolute analogue version, after building a digital version at ZKM Karlsruhe. But I enjoy the analogue version more because of its accuracy, no digital rendering. So I'd like to thank Christoph Freidhöfer, who had the idea of building this as an analogue device and the arts council of the city of Vienna supporting this endeavour financially. #lightartwork #lightpainting #colorray #saxophone #experimentalmusic by @michael_fischer_sound_spaces

Michael Fischer works on the speech immanence of sounds and their sculptural and dramatic evidence, in the field of free improvised, experimental music and sound-art. In 1999, he began to integrate the acoustic phenomenon feedback into his work and re-contextualized the tenor saxophone as feedback-saxophone within the electronic sound-production - an exclusively analog instrument (no processings, no pedals), which was further developed at ZKM - Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe or STEIM Amsterdam. In 2004 he launched the Vienna Improvisers Orchestra and is its artistic director and instant composition conductor. Since mid of the 90ies his works has been presented at festivals and venues in Europe, Lebanon, Canada, USA and Japan. Photo: @olaqueen_oq by @michael_fischer_sound_spaces

🕡 18:30–19:30 📍 16.
