Should we be manufacturing blizzards in the Desert? The Colorado River can be considered one of the most important natural resources in the United States. It provides water and power to over 40 million people, in addition to some of the most productive farmland in the country. Overallocation of river water to Southwestern states coupled with devastating droughts have dried up Lake Mead - the resevoir created by the hoover dam that acts as an idicator of the river's health and distributes water downstream. In 2022, it reached all-time low levels, filling just 27% of its capacity. Scientists have been exploring ways to fill the lake back to its glory days. The most critical element for healthy rivers and lakes is winter snowpack. I've been wondering if the extra snow we are getting in the Southwest this year could be due to cloud seeding programs. You may have seen headlines about Lake Tahoe, California. The small resort town has accumulated the most snow in the country this year. Usually it recieves around 159 inches, but as of March 10th, Tahoe received 531 inches - with more to come. I just learned about DRI today. "During the early 1960s, scientists from the Desert Research Institute (DRI) helped to pioneer the science of wintertime cloud seeding, developing research-based methods for increasing winter snowpack and subsequent snowmelt runoff across mountainous regions of the Western US... During the 2022-2023 winter season (November – May), DRI will conduct cloud seeding research and operations in six mountain ranges including the Lake Tahoe Basin (CA/NV), Spring Mountains (NV), Ruby Mountains (NV), Santa Rosa Mountains (NV), the San Juan Mountains (CO), and in the Upper Colorado River Headwaters region along the Continental Divide in northern Colorado." https://www.dri.edu/cloud-seeding-program/# by @michaelgettens
Did you know seeds grown with synthetic fertilizers (like miracle-gro) need more water than naturally grown seeds? In a healthy ecosystem, trillions of micro-organisms live in the soil. They are bacteria, fungi, nematodes and more. Efficient decomposers of organic matter, they transform old material on forests floors and meadows into nutrients plants can use. "Conventional" agriculture trys to sterilize soil with pesticides and chemicals that harm microbial life. Then, they add water-soluble nutrients to make up for the harms done. Extra water is needed to dissolve the granular fertilizers. The soil food web has evolved over billions of years to develop the most effective recycling system of life. In less than 100 years, we have forgotten about this, and chose to replace it with a system that damages life, pollutes and wastes more water than leaky, sprawling cities. by @michaelgettens
All that was, is changed All that is now, shall be All that we value...will live forever Any shape we choose Every choice we make All aspects Decide life Is it predestined? That would go against creation Art determines the current Our hearts and minds in twined Acting true makes learning Discoveries, like formulas Most of its already here But without us It never was by @michaelgettens
There are many forms of water harvesting we can experiment with. This is an active system because someone physically has to use this water from the tank for it to work. It is also referred to as a "wet system" because, instead of the water flowing directly from the gutter into the tank, it fills up a series of pipes before dumping into the lowest point above the tank. Other types include, Earthworks a.k.a Passive Stormwater Collection, Greywater Recycling, and A/C Condensation Harvesting, to name a few. What ways are you working with water in the desert Southwest? by @michaelgettens
\\Initiate{AbstractCircle} path:earth ⛢꧂ transmitting{MICHAEL PAUL} “Water and land dance to their own vibrations when meeting on shore. Life from the ocean inoculates the soil with evolutionary beings. Plants grow and more specialized lifeforms follow. Air feeds the same fire that cooks the food and begins again. Follow seasonal patterns, cycles and changes; 100 day droughts and Monsoon rains bless the desert and activate advantageous, Summertime seedlings.” Michael is honored to be among myriad explorers and artists who discover expression in all forms, especially music. Sound has a powerful effect on us humans and the world around us. It creates patterns that heal. He is a writer, landscape designer, and guitarist.   Favorite plant currently:  Blue Agave Join the world of abundant, natural systems by growing with the rhythm of Mother Earth.  @michaelgettens by @michaelgettens
The Southwestern part of North America is blessed this year by an early start to a warm, wet Monsoon Season. The medicinal Sonoran Desert and her highlands to the North sprout with new growth. The Summer Monsoon usually begins in July, providing a diverse landscape with much needed moisture after the hottest, (fire raveged,) driest month of the year. This is one of the traditional planting times for indigenous people of the Southwest, and possibly the first ever season of agriculture in this hemisphere millenia ago. "The 3 Sisters" are a planting guild that was culivated and improved by many generations of ancestors. Corn, beans, and squash grow best together in hot weather and a wet Monsoon Season means abundance in the desert. New guilds can adapt with us, as well as the climate to provide ultimate benefit to Earth and Mankind. Here is the start to my experiement with one blend of crops selected to work together in restoring soil life and providing food, habitat and medicine for people and wildlife. If stone be her bones And soil, her skin Then plants are her clothes And we, her children Water is her blood And wind, her breath makes Light shines upon today To show us her new face She gives me life, So alive I must keep Making the choice of service Breaking the chains of belief by @michaelgettens
Looking into ancient, underwater cliffs Fossilized stories become more real than the sponsored narratives we post all in our reels These stones, they speak to me Sharing heartbreak, sharing ceremony Sharing regrets and pathways forward... "Keep up with the times, but don't forget your past To find out where you're headed, gotta check up on your elders Lost track of the flow? Cuz you're living in the future Can't appreciate the water, till you're stuck out in the desert Sit back and observe earthly weather, it won't last But the actions we take will ripple out past seven feathers Going back to school to locate our position This time, learn how to really live, and not just make a living Cuz the scriptures we were given is in a decoy language Remember forgotten wisdom, release words and all the thinking Coming back to logic, means coming back to heart Act from compassion instead of irrational, emotional decisions" ____ Photo by: photographylife.com by @michaelgettens
When all the problems seem too many and I don't feel like I'm enough I wanna hide from everybody I wanna starve myself from love When the wildfires burning and theres no rain or chance of slowing I gotta run down to the valley Summer breeze just keeps a blowing When I cast off my desires and I'm left with needle and thread I'm gonna sew a new tomorrow Cuz today, know I ain't dead When I feel these lost sensations And connect with real emotions I get closer to my purpose Learning more just who I am by @michaelgettens
The narrative of climate change is usually about fossil fuels or veganism. One of the biggest factors is actually inappropriate land use. Habitat, wildland destruction, and just bad design accounts for many problems such as desertification and floods. For thousands of years we have been walking a delicate balance of meeting our human needs while allowing the Earth time to regenerate. What can we do? Help nature reclaim degraded landscapes. Slow down erosion. Accelerate the regeneration of biodiversity. Collect seeds. Plant the rain. If we are looking to live with nature, let her show us how. Ask what she needs, and the way will be revealed. Be good to ourselves and our families like how the Earth shares her love with us. by @michaelgettens
Be careful when you wish for "Anything other than this" Cause before you know it, the curtains closing No time to do it again Be present with the feeling Cause one day you might miss it We wanna change the way it is Nostalgia remenising I wonder what life would be like if we raised her kids There's so many pathways So many exits U-turns and highways And signs say, "Do not enter" Someone else went ahead And discovered a dead end Green lights glow And my foot says, "Go!" My eyes see the way back But my heart says, "No!" Are these even emotions, Or just chemical potions? Adrenaline and dopamine My focus has been opening My love has become closed again My lifespan starts closing in... The walls compress my body I see the light then go within I'm walking thru the lobby What I find ain't nice and pretty Harsh remarks remind me Of a life in the big city Where training wheels Look like insights to insults And how to be more gritty I wanna touch hills See for miles without a building Underground structures With simple passive cooling A wood stove burning With a skylight turning Toward the winter sun A garden sits above Starting to feel my roots are strong now Spring weather more eminent I'm growing with my love by @michaelgettens
