Hi! My name is michele and I am a 4-year Triple Negative Breast Cancer survivor. I am proud to be part of the TNBC foundation power of 3, TNBC day campaign for the second year in a row.

Today is March 3rd, which is Triple Negative Breast Cancer Awareness Day. It kicks off an entire month of education awareness and fundraising.

✨To learn more about our fundraising campaign and to donate, please go to @tnbcfoundation — 100% of donations from individuals goes to TNBC specific research. 🙌🏾

I’d like to share three things that helped me along my journey that I still use today…

💕Jot down any and all questions in between appointments. You may think you’ll remember but that question may swiftly exit stage left when you’re sitting in front of your Oncologist. Use a cute notebook or the Notes feature on your phone.

💕Got achy muscles and joints due to chemotherapy? Take a relaxing warm Epsom salt bath. Sensitive to fragrances? Reach for unscented bath salt. Light a candle and turn on some relaxing music. This still helps me as I manage my rickety menopause joints and sore muscles. 🙃

💕Allow yourself to FEEL all the feels. Processing and expressing your thoughts and emotions is so important in the healing process and overall. Suppressing them is unhealthy and only makes you feel overwhelmed. Cry if you need to cry, speak with your loved ones, and know that you can obtain a mental health therapist if needed. Take care of yourself.

Thank you to our sponsors for making the 2022 Power of 3 TNBC day campaign possible!

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 40’s. Sadly, I always had in the back of my mind, that between me and my sisters, I would get breast cancer. I never told anyone that I believed this; rather I agonized over it. At age 30, I started getting mammograms (due to family history) and every year I was anxious as I waited for the results.

In February 2018, my mammogram came back suspicious but after an ultrasound I was told I was clear. BUT, 3 months later, after finding a lump, I IMMEDIATELY went to my Gynecologist’s office (no appointment, mind you). My Gynecologist at the time (who happens to be a black woman) referred me for a 3D mammogram and a biopsy and I was diagnosed with Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

Did you know that some black women tend to have more dense breasts? This means that having a 3D mammogram screening is key which was the case for me.

And according to the CDC, black women and white women get breast cancer at about the same rate, but black women die from breast cancer at a higher rate than white women...pretty scary!

To my black sisters, it is so important to advocate for yourself and to ask questions no matter what in order to get the care you deserve. You know your body best so don’t ever let anyone make you feel as though what you are feeling is invalid.

Please, please, please do your monthly self breast exams and always get your mammograms. If you feel something, say something right away. Early detection is key!

This is what healing looks like. Taking the time to intentionally rest and spend quality time with my family, along with prayer and therapy has allowed me to gradually heal from the trauma of breast cancer; and most recently, going flat (removal of implants) due to my body rejecting my implants by way infections/complications. For those of you going through it, please be gentle with yourself and don’t be afraid to get the help you need, it gets better! 🙏🏽

I love doing life with my hubby...he’s my best friend, he makes me laugh, and he loves me unconditionally. Grateful for him is an understatement. 🙏🏽

This man right here is my everything! He has been by my side for 27 years. Since my emergency explant surgery, due to the major Staph infection I contracted, I have learned to appreciate even more the little things I took for granted. Being able to lay on my side comfortably, being able to lay on my stomach without pain, but most of all being able to hug my husband closely and feel his chest against mine without obstruction and with no pain. So, going through the agony and extreme pain from my infection to having my implants removed has been a blessing. I will always trust in God as He has perfect timing and better plans for my life than I do.

Happy for hair growth! Can’t believe I was completely bald almost 2 years ago. I had straight relaxed hair since middle school and now I’m embracing my naturally curly locks! 🙌🏾
