Thanks to @seattle2025worldcon for inviting me to be a panelist. It was such a treat to meet creatives, writers, and readers from as far as Greece to as close as the town next door this week, all gathered with a shared love of stories that inspire an expansive sense of possibility.

On the surface, my two panels were as different as could be: Pop Culture Cookbooks and Where Are All the Boogeywomen? But perhaps they’re not as disparate as they seem. I write about food because it’s been one of the primary ways I’ve experienced love. I write fiction—particularly folkloric fantasy and body horror—because these are the genres that best hold the stories I long to tell.

As an arts marketer, cookbook author, novelist, and survivor, I deeply believe stories are essential; they are part of what makes us human. Stories, whether on stage or on the page, capture emotions and experiences otherwise impossible to articulate. We overcome hardship by rewriting the narrative of our lives, reshaping our brains through neuroplasticity. When you help a victim find her voice—and empower her to use it—you transform her life, and there’s no telling how far she’ll go to change the world.

Being on the Where Are All the Boogeywomen? panel with Sadie Hartmann (AKA @mother.horror), @michelleruizkeil, @elizabeth_guizzetti, Tamara Kaye Sellman, and C.S. Humble was an honor. This panel was fascinating, not only as an exploration of the “boogeyman,” but also as a reminder that women writing horror, often informed by personal atrocity, can illuminate urgent truths about our world today.

And of course, the Pop Culture Cookbooks panel was a blast, and it reminded me how grateful I am to have been able to co-create Disney Frozen: The Official Cookbook and DreamWorks Dragons: Recipes from the Isle of Berk. If you’re a Fallout fan, check out Janet Forbes who created an entire Fallout feast for her RPG gaming group (she shares the menu on the @worldanvil blog).

Worldcon was one of the most welcoming, inviting, and creativity-inspired experiences. It was a pleasure meeting so many of you there! by @michelleruizkeil

Woman on a mission. Almost done with this book! by @michelleruizkeil

A circle of three volunteer plum trees grew in the yard. I told my family it looked like a sacred spot marked by the trees. We find deer reating there often, sometimes on their sides totally crashed out! They have made an indentation in the grass that is worn smooth now from so many resting there. Today's visitor was this sweet fawn. Her ears are the best. by @michelleruizkeil

One of the best creative experiences I've had in years has been working on this show with @shakingthetreetheatre. As one of eight playwrights, it was a joy to see my words come to life under the care of director @samvan15 and actor Sofia Marks. I just saw a preview of the whole show and I am absolutely astounded. Eight Rooms. Eight Stories. It's a transformative adventure you don't want to miss! I'm pretty sure opening night is sold out but tickets are available for other nights--you won't regret it! by @michelleruizkeil
