![A few of my teammates have written blogs about our recent journey to the Touch Rugby World Cup 2024, where I had the great privilege to represent The Netherlands π³π± in the Men's 30s, alongside our Women's Open team. They have all inspired me to try my hand at writing about my experience.
The destination was set: Nottingham, England. The date was set: July 15th, 2024. The team was selected from the best competitive pool the Netherlands has ever seen. After several months of training, gym work, theory, mental preparation/mental gym, specialist movement biomechanics, clean eating, and no alcohol, I felt like I was in a good space to contribute and perform at my very best for my team, Country and to #leaveitalloutthere.
The schedule was grueling, with 11 games over 7 days, playing against the best from Fiji, New Zealand, Japan, France, Wales, Singapore, Hong Kong, Belgium, South Africa, and Switzerland. The body held together well with minimal disturbance, proving the hard work with my fitness regime of running, HIIT, fascia release, and correcting biomechanics systems was paying off. I came away with some moments of performance that I could happily share and also some performances that i get to learn the most from.
A moment in time I am most grateful and humbled by was being voted by my fellow teammates/brothers as the workhorse/MVP of the week. For me, there is no higher honor, and it has similarities to being named Caesar, [emperor of Rome]. The symbolic award is a little fu*ken toy horse and a clog, both of which sit on display in my living room as a reminder of what is possible when you get to, want to, and love to do what you do.
As I close the chapter on TRWC24, Iβd like to thank with a heavy heart my friends and family for your support and challenge throughout the whole campaign. Iβd do it all again with you all tomorrow. Whatβs next? Shrouded in mystery & adventureβ¦ yet the art of "chop wood, carry water" remains a mastery I still pursue.
