(español abajo) Congratulations to our friends at @aft_vermont, @uvmmc_supportstaffunited, and the Vermont Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals for their successful contract negotiations! Sí se pudo! Thousands of workers at the UVM Medical Center won a new contract after months of negotiations. As they pushed for livable wages and safe staffing, they also negotiated a set of “Common Good” proposals. Among those demands: that the hospital join #milkwithdignity and buy its milk from farms that treat workers fairly. Because of these efforts, the UVMMC has agreed to "engage in good-faith discussions" about participation in the Program! We're so grateful for this incredible show of solidarity and look forward to continuing to push for the rights and dignity of all workers. . . .
Organized, educated workers are the best defenders of their rights. Corporations are responsible for the consequences of their purchasing practices. That’s the starting point for Worker-driven Social Responsibility, a model that is recognized for its effectiveness in ensuring safer working conditions and more dignified work for millions of people from the farm fields of Florida to the factories of Bangladesh to the dairy barns of Vermont. This new toolkit captures learnings from worker organizations, unions, and advocacy organizations that have been on the front lines of developing the model, including @migrantjusticevt, @ctul_tc & others. Popular education is a core component of Worker-driven Social Responsibility and this toolkit is designed as a workbook for organizers and worker leaders to guide your base to understand the vital role of binding enforceable agreements and adapt the model to meet the realities of your industry and workplace. @hannafordmkts President Mike Vail and his executives scheduled a retreat at a luxury hotel here in Vermont, so we planned a warm welcome. Instead of talking to workers, they canceled the trip and lost tens of thousands of dollars. What are you afraid of? Face workers and join #milkwithdignity . . .
Breaking: Hannaford cancels its Vermont executive retreat! Rather than face farmworkers, Hannaford president Mike Vail has decided to turn tail. Following the announcement of our planned action, the company has moved its retreat to an alternative location and canceled its reservation, losing a deposit likely worth tens of thousands of dollars. Farmworkers are undeterred by the company’s cowardice. Hannaford execs may be too scared to face the facts, but workers and consumers remain united demanding Milk with Dignity. With the Vermont retreat canceled, farmworkers are calling for a store picket back at the South Burlington Hannaford where we recently celebrated the program anniversary. Join farmworkers on the picket line on Thursday 10/15, 4-6:30pm at Hannaford Supermarket (935 Shelburne Rd, South Burlington, VT) to demand Milk with Dignity! by @migrantjusticevt
10/10 update: Hannaford cancels VT retreat, hides from farmworkers! Read the recent post for updated information. --- From October 14th -16th, Hannaford executives are meeting in Stowe, Vermont for a corporate leadership retreat. We want to make sure that company president Mike Vail and his colleagues get the welcome they deserve! Throughout the years, workers have traveled repeatedly to Hannaford’s corporate headquarters in Maine (and more recently, to the headquarters of Hannaford’s parent company in Massachusetts and in the Netherlands) in an attempt to directly address executives. Each time, Hannaford has confronted workers with locked doors, security barricades, and threats of arrest. With executives now coming to the home state of Milk with Dignity, we have an unprecedented opportunity to make them listen to farmworkers. Hannaford executives are holding their three day retreat at the Spruce Peak Lodge in Stowe. During their arrival on Wednesday the 14th, throughout the day on Thursday the 15th, and as they leave on Friday the 16th, we will make our voices heard and ensure – whether they want it or not – that Milk with Dignity will be on their agenda! by @migrantjusticevt
Saturday marked the ninth anniversary of the first Milk with Dignity agreement and the launch of the groundbreaking worker-driven human rights program. Through Milk with Dignity, hundreds of dairy workers have won unparalleled protections, and farms have received millions of dollars to invest in higher wages and improved labor and housing conditions. The program’s impact has been nothing short of transformational. Farmworkers celebrated the occasion with a spirited action pushing for the expansion of the program. Workers and allies picketed Hannaford Supermarket, calling on the grocery chain to join Milk with Dignity and source its store-brand milk from farms that protect workers’ rights. Picketers urged consumers not to shop at the store, resulting in many potential customers turning away and a nearly-empty parking lot throughout the protest. The successful action brought out hundreds of supporters – and brought a march past security barricades and right to the front door of the store. Check out the photo-report from Saturday’s Milk with Dignity celebration and Hannaford picket. Flip to the final graphic for an exciting announcement about the next Milk with Dignity action! by @migrantjusticevt
In June, we shared the news that thousands of workers (with @uvmmc_supportstaffunited and the Vermont Federation of Nurses & Health Professionals) had begun to jointly bargain a new contract with the state’s largest employer, the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC). Among their contract articles is a proposal that UVMMC join the Milk with Dignity Program and buy its dairy products from farms that treat workers fairly. Over the past several months, farmworkers have joined with hospital workers in the fight for a fair contract. Migrant Justice leaders have spoken at press conferences, joined union members in marches and rallies, and presented on the Milk with Dignity Program at contract negotiation sessions. This inspirational, cross-sectoral worker solidarity has inspired other labor unions to consider similar Milk with Dignity demands and has generated positive press coverage. Last week, however, hospital executives presented a “last, best, and final” offer to workers that would worsen current safe staffing processes and job security protections – and that continues to leave Milk with Dignity out of the contract. Today, October 2nd, the 3,300 support staff and technical workers at the hospital announced that they have authorized a strike. Take a minute to send an email to hospital executives letting them know that you stand with healthcare workers! Link in bio (Photos from when we marched together at Pride! Almost 300 calls made to the president of Hannaford supermarket today calling for #MilkwithDignity!!! Great work everyone!!! by @migrantjusticevt
Today! Show your solidarity with farmworkers and join with hundreds of campaign supporters calling Hannaford Supermarkets to demand #MilkWithDignity! Once you call, leave a comment below letting us know how it went! by @migrantjusticevt
On 10/3, join us from 3-7 pm at the Hannaford in South Burlington to celebrate #milkwithdignity ’s anniversary and urge @hannafordmkts to join the Program! In just one week, we will celebrate the nine-year anniversary of @benandjerrys joining the Milk with Dignity Program. For nearly a decade, the program has safeguarded the human rights of hundreds of dairy workers in Vermont and New York, and reinvested millions of dollars into ensuring that the farms improve conditions to meet the worker-authored Code of Conduct. This year, we celebrate @vermontwayfoods joining Ben & Jerry’s to become Milk with Dignity’s second participating buyer! Hannaford Supermarket now has the opportunity to follow others’ lead and join the Milk with Dignity Program. For years, the grocery chain has failed to join the program while continuing to profit from the abuses in its supply chain. Workers’ message is loud and clear: Hannaford, it’s time to get with the Program! On Saturday, 10/3, farmworkers and allies will picket in front of Hannaford Supermarket (935 Shelburne Rd, South Burlington). From 3-7 pm, join workers on the picket line and urge potential customers to show their solidarity by not shopping at the store. This will be a high-energy event: if you have an instrument, bring it with you, and be ready to chant and sing alongside your neighbors. The picket will conclude with a hot, home-cooked meal. by @migrantjusticevt
We call on lawmakers to declare Operation Stonegarden fundamentally incompatible with the Fair and Impartial Policing Policy and to end the state’s participation in the program. In August, Migrant Justice exposed the role of the Chittenden County Sheriff’s Office in the detention and deportation of local farmworker Alex Jimenez. A deputy pulled over Alex on a routine traffic stop, texted Border Patrol agents to come to the scene, and aided them in pulling Alex out of the car and detaining him. The collaboration between a local cop and federal agents has been big news in Vermont and beyond, and has resulted in swift denunciations. Everyone from the Chittenden County Sheriff to the Governor has unequivocally called out the deputy’s actions as a violation of the Fair and Impartial Policing Policy. The incident has resulted in multiple, ongoing investigations. The detention of Alex Jimenez has also shined a light on a little-known federal program: Operation Stonegarden. Through Stonegarden, local police are paid overtime shifts to conduct patrols under the authority of Customs and Border Protection. Wearing their own uniforms and driving local agency vehicles, officers act under direct Border Patrol supervision. While lawmakers were quick to distance themselves from the deputy’s actions, they have doubled down on their support for Stonegarden. This inconsistency is as illogical as it is unacceptable. by @migrantjusticevt
