The Lower Klamath River is a different kind of place. The river carves through redwoods and dense coastal forest, mist hangs on the hillsides at dawn, and there are no roads meaning access is by water, and water alone.

Our latest Klamath Spey Camp fishing trip brought anglers by jet boat to a private riverside camp right in the middle of some of California’s best swing water. Guests learned to spey cast or sharpened their technique with @confluenceoutfitters guides, fished a newly restored Klamath River, and fell asleep to the sound of the water beneath towering redwoods. Head guide Gino and crew made it feel like a glamping trip, with great food to match.

CalTrout’s fishing experiences are about stepping inside the work of restoring California’s rivers, alongside the guides, scientists, conservationists, and communities making it happen. 🎣

Just when you thought the word “complicated” had run its course, roll up your mental sleeves and wade into the Truckee River. In “The Willful Suspension of Disbelief,” Greg Robinson sobers us up with the saga of one of California’s (and Nevada’s) cherished trout streams. Learn the insightful history and present realities behind the Truckee River and its management, notably that which we often choose to overlook.

This week marks the second anniversary of the completion of Dam removal on the Klamath River. Four main stem dams were removed comprising the largest river restoration project in history. Since then, over 20,000 salmon have moved past the former dam sites and recolonized habitat where they hadn’t been present for 100 years. In celebration of that anniversary I wanted to release our film “Native to the Klamath” to the public.

“Native to the Klamath” is a story told through the voices of the salmon people. The Klamath River is currently going through one of the largest transformations in history. Native to the Klamath intertwines environmental restoration, reconciliation ecology, social justice, and traditional ecological knowledge. Hear the story of this river renewal through the words of the Klamath River peoples who live by the sacred obligation of stewardship.

Our little angel Jakey got called back to heaven this week. Jake was about as good at dogging as any dog that ever dogged. He was the goodest boy too. Jake was with me through the hardest times of my life and through the best. He was a heck of a road dog and always down for an adventure.

Jake started as my dad’s companion for the first half of his life. When dad was killed unexpectedly in a motorcycle accident, Jake came to live with me. It turned out to be the best thing that could’ve ever happened for me. One last stoke out from the old man that I didn’t even know I needed.

For those of you that knew Jake, you know that he liked to party. He loved being around people and being part of the action. Whether it was at the beach in Tahoe or at a CalTrout event or hosting folks at the property, Jake was the official greeter. He loved to come say hi to everyone and just double triple check if they might’ve had any treats for him or a ball hiding in their pocket. If you left a beer unattended, there was a good chance he would slurp that down too.

Most of all Jake just liked being around his people. He was always by my side through thick and thin. He has been such an incredible blessing in mine and Jessica’s lives. He brought a lot of joy to our whole family. I am convinced he was an angel sent to help guide me through that time in my life and get me to where I am now. He will be sorely missed. If you knew Jake feel free to share a fun memory.

Chopped! by @mikowier

Almost always get blessed a powder day for my birthday present. But not this year. So I was reminded of these photos from my 18th birthday.

TJ, Frontside Fred, Earl and I piled into Nikki’s CJ7 jeep with all our boards and gear. We planned a typical birthday session at Iron Mountain side country. When I woke up I was feeling sick like the flu. But F it, im not one to sit it out or hold up the crew. So we rallied.

By the time we got up there I was feeling like 💩. The dudes helped me get dressed and basically dragged me out to the zone. I passed out under a tree while they built a jump. Not sure how much time passed but I woke up and out of a dream looked down to a perfect ramp. They gave me first hit. I strapped in, got stoked and chucked my favorite misty flip.

Ended up being a solid session with the highlight being Fred chucking a laid out backie straight over TJ and slapping him 5 in the air. Nikki had an old 35mm camera and some black and white film that she was able to develop in the dark room at Columbia JC. She didn’t nail every shot, but she got that one.

That legendary session turned into a multi year tradition of big air barbecues and birthday backies at the Burl Park. 🤘⚡️🤘⚡️🤘 by @mikowier

You can watch all the fishing reels and look through awesome steelhead pics, but there’s no replacement for getting out on the river. Steelhead are curious animals and so are we. And that means discovering the magic of California’s wild places and native species ourselves. 💚🐟 #steelheadsunday by @mikowier

Honored to have this film screening in the wild and scenic film festival in Nevada City tomorrow at 10 AM at the Oddfellows Hall. What a privilege it has been to spend time in the Klamath basin and get to see the transformation first hand of both the river and the communities along the river. I know this dam removal has been very complicated and many people have had a different experience with it but I’ve seen a lot of good happening for the lower Klamath Tribes. Grateful to help share some of their side of the story.

🐟🥰Did you know some fish celebrate Valentine’s day too?

VDay falls right in the middle of the spawning season for winter Steelhead. This time of year is prime time for these couples in many coastal systems. If you’re out in the water and notice fish paired up or in a particular area or if you see them flashing down in the depths, then they’re most likely spawning.

Their redds (or nests) are pits that the female digs out in the gravel. They are often at the tail-outs to pools. Redds can also be below fast current in the deep buckets. If you see clean gravel and fish sitting on them, please give them space to do their thing. 💌💌

Favorite day of the week….Steelhead Sunday!

Wild winter steelhead are one of the toughest, sneakiest, strongest, and most tenacious fish to swim in freshwater. California is lucky to have them in our coastal rivers. Together, we can keep it that way forever.

Follow along with @californiatrout’s Field Reporter @mikowier and Professional Snowboarder @johnjamun on their hunt for native Paiute cutthroat trout - one of California’s incredibly rare species of native inland trout.

🐟 But don’t worry, they’re just here to observe because fishing for this species is not allowed. Stay tuned for the next installment of where in the world (of California rivers) is Mikey Wier now?!
