The exhibition Earth Elements: Paint and Fire closes next Friday, October 9. Come see this terrific show before it closes. Pictured is @minaya_marco sculpture titled “Remains of the Ascent”, 2026, 50x25x18 inches. In this piece Marco has seamlessly synthesized elements of pre-Colombian art, ancient alien UFO mythology, early 20th century modernist abstraction and brutalist architecture. In a fluid stream of stylistic influences each of the notes touch one and draw the viewer into a timeless space where ancient cultures and futuristic fantasy glide on the wings of the artists imagination. The gallery is open today Saturday October 3 and tomorrow Sunday, and will be open again next Thursday and Friday with a closing on Friday October 9, 4-7pm. I will give a curators walkthrough at 6pm and talk about the idea that inspired the show and about each artist. @wonzimer 341 S Ave 17, Los Angeles. Wönzimer is proud to present Earth Elements: Paint and Fire, a group exhibition curated by Gary Brewer. Bringing together a dynamic group of artists, this show explores the intersection of the ceramic medium and contemporary painting. The Western tradition of ceramics began to free itself from its utilitarian ethos beginning with George Ohr in the early 20th century. In the 1950s, after a residency at Black Mountain College, Peter Voulkos took things further, creating abstract expressionist ceramic sculptures, guided by physicality and improvisational gesture. His work liberated future ceramic artists from long-held traditions of the craft. While Gary Brewer was living in the Bay Area in the 1970s the art world was still immersed in critical arguments trying to uphold some distinction between art and craft. During this time, central to these discussions were artists like Viola Frey and Robert Arneson, who were using the ceramic medium to make powerful works that were irreverent, funny and profound. A sneak peek at the excitement unfolding within the walls of @wonzimer. @minaya_marco assembling his fantastic, architectonic sculpture melding pre columbian art, with brutalist architecture, ancient aliens and early modernist influences. A fantastic piece in its bold formal poetry. On the other end of the universe @aaronsheppardart brings us his Dionysian energy to a Frankenstein assemblage of parts: bear foot and head, acid green pirate skull, desert cowboy boots with mouse along for the ride. His figure is part acid dream and transgressive totemic persona. Come this Friday, September 4, 5-10pm to @wonzimer 341 S Ave 17, Los Angeles for the opening of “Earth Elements: Paint and Fire” and revel in the sea of creativity! #contemporaryart #ceramicsculpture #losangelesartists #joshuatreeartists by @minaya_marco
