40 acre day by @miranduhjane

This past sunday Justin, Max, Ovi and I went on the hardest *accidental* hike.

We thought we were driving to the start of White Oak Canyon Trail, planning to hike up to the first lower falls. Somehow we ended up driving all the way to the top, where the upper falls are. At that point we figured …fuck it. Driving back down would’ve added another hour, so we decided to just start there.

What was supposed to be a 3-ish mile hike up and back turned into a 7.3 mile hike down and then back up. It was the hardest physical thing I’ve ever done. I pushed myself further than I ever have and had moments where I genuinely didn’t know if my legs could keep going.

It took us about 2.5 hours to reach the lower falls. Our legs were shaking by the time we got there. We swam, sat in the water, had a little cacao ceremony, and took a moment to give thanks to the earth for carrying us through it.

Then we started the climb back up.

I couldn’t really talk anymore. I just kept picking one place in front of me and telling myself to make it there. My first goal was this little waterfall we had passed on the way down. When I finally dragged myself underneath it and the cold water hit me, something about it felt deeply cleansing. I felt like I was being reborn, high, or just plain crazy. I even did a little maniacal laugh and scream 😂

We ate peaches that tasted like the best thing i had ever had, took in the mountains around us, the little sun beams through the trees, and saw two deer on the way back up.

Six hours later, we made it back!

It was exhausting, painful, beautiful, grounding, and spiritual. 🌀 There’s something to be said about pushing your body to its absolute limit and then sitting in cold river water surrounded by nothing but trees and mountains that makes you feel very complete.

I left that trail feeling incredibly grateful to be alive and already wanting to go back into the woods. I have definitely caught the hiking bug since.

Oh goodness… what do I even say! I’ve been gone from most socials almost a month and I have learned so much. I miss everyone’s faces and updates…very much. (and sharing my own) But, it has made me realize so deeply how much social media truly disconnects me more than it connects me. If you know me, you know how honest I am. I wear my heart on my sleeves and always have. I’m starting this journey to rewrite my life…social media addiction is tooo real. We can sit and scroll for SO long, feeding ourselves dopamine hits and comparisons to others lives. It left me paralyzed and unhappy. Wanting to start hobbies but having no motivation to do so. Having random spurts of anger and lashing out because I was wasting my life, my precious time here, just scrolling! I can say that I feel so much healthier without the constant updates and doomscrolling …but also a slight disconnect. Almost everyone I know connects mostly through social media. It makes me miss my friends. People don’t really text, and people never call. It’s not the norm anymore. We are scared of true connection. When I was a child, people would call or just show up to your house. Navigating this generation is foreign! I feel so blessed yet like I’m still missing something. Deleting socials and logging on through a computer to do my scrolling and stay updated is something I’m dipping my toes in. Social media addiction is a slippery slope because of how normalized it is now and how you won’t really hear from people on here unless you’re extremely close. I want that to change in my life. I want my social media to be a place of true connection. It’s going to take time and rewiring. Get outside, leave your phone on dnd for a couple days, create some art. If you’re reading this and we haven’t texted lately, I have missed your face! I hope you are well. Conversations don’t have to be hard. Let’s connect. Have a blessed spring 🙏🏽 🌷 🌼 by @miranduhjane
