I had the pleasure of being able to read my poem in English for the first time.
It was also the first time that I started writing directly in English, as I usually write in Spanish.
I am very proud of myself, and it was nice to be able to express my feelings in a language that I am learning more of every day.

Lesson

I name myself was born from the feeling in me when I gave up the name my parents chose. and start being called by who I really am.

Me nombro
Y todavía estoy aprendiendo a nombrarme
Mirthu, no Martha. by @mirthux.8743

The husband stitch
When a gave birth to my first baby I had a third degree tear, it needed to be stitched so they took me to the surgery room to do it.
For me it was all normal,

until 3 months later remembering the birth with my ex-husband he commented something that left me frozen.
He said that when they put me in the surgery room the surgeon asked him if he would like me to get an extra stitch.
There are no words that describe everything I felt at that moment when hearing that story, 3 months later.
What? Why?
Why would they do that to me?
Why do they even dare to ask him something that only sounds pleasant to him?
I still feel nauseous when I remember it.
And this did not happen in Paraguay.

It was here, in NY. At Phelps hospital on March 26, 2019.
Then I discovered the term "the husband stitch."
An ancient practice, and of course patriarchal and not at all ethical.
My body is my temple, but that day they violated me, and I am tired of this, how can I feel safe if, simply because I am a woman, other people who have a minimum of power can dare to do with my body what they want?
How can I feel safe, if 2 months ago my friend Mel died due to negligence during her cesarean section, leaving 3 children orphaned?
How can we be safe if 1 month ago another friend had to leave her country to have a safe abortion?
I wish that deciding TO BE OR NOT TO BE a mother stops being a risk.
I demand that deciding TO BE OR NOT TO BE A MOTHER does not cost us our mental health.
Autonomy over our bodies, here and in the rest of the world.
Because being a woman should not be a risk.
Being treated humanely should not be a requirement. It is a right.

I name myself
I am not nor do I want to be the one my parents named
I deny the name my father chose
Why would someone name their daughter their ex's name?
Why should an 8 year old girl know the meaning of that?
I am not nor do I want to be what others expect of me.
And I'm still learning to name myself
But in that learning extraordinary things happen
People who see me, who hear me, who respect my name.
People who understood that respect is so simple, easy and with enormous power.
Even so, there are moments where I continue to introduce myself with that name that I don't feel identified with, that name that I reject.
And I thank my English teacher who one day told me: you don't need to introduce yourself as Martha. If you want to be called Mirthu, do that.
For some it is just that, a name.
For me it is my identity, who I am, who I want to be and how I want to be remembered.
We should all be able to have that right.
To choose to be whoever we want or feel to be.
That is why today I name myself and to all those who respect me, thank you.
Because when I decide to be who I am, when I conquer that freedom, I also give others the opportunity to be that way.
By being and feeling free, I teach my children that they can and should also be whatever they want to be.
I'm Mirthu, not Martha, I don't prefer to be called that, it's WHO I AM.
I don't want you to do me a favor, I want you to respect it.
Mirthu, not Martha. by @mirthux.8743
