We tried this on one of our quail. Our girl, Madea, was not amused 😅. My husband was quick to criticize the lack of eye holes but I dare you to try lining up eye holes on this little bird 💀

I know he’s just here for the treats, but I like to pretend like he actually knows his name. How handsome is this guy?! 🐓💕

We’re still here. 🤍

August has been a long and incredibly difficult month. After losing Simba, we made the incredibly difficult decision to cull our rooster, Alistair. I’ve been meaning to talk about that, and I still hope to share more about it in a separate post when I’m ready.

But just when I was finally starting to feel like I could breathe again, my father passed away…

We had an extremely complicated relationship, and his passing has brought up a lot of strange, complex emotions that I’m still trying to understand and work through. Grief is rarely simple, but this has been especially hard to navigate.

Honestly, I’ve really struggled with what to post, and even what I want this page to be. This is our farm business page, but it’s always been a little piece of our personal lives, but lately, even the thought of making a post feels overwhelming.

So we’ve been quiet. But we’re still here. Still taking care of the animals, still making treats, still working behind the scenes, and slowly finding our footing again.

For now, we’re just quietly contemplating how we want to reconnect with all of you and what this space should look like moving forward.

Thank you for being here, it means more than you know. by @mittenvarietyfarm

I mean that wasn’t a no 😅

Casper’s first time trying quail eggs was comical to say the least. We haven’t done a lot of egg with him so I wasn’t sure how he would do. He did try it and definitely was interested in the shell but….

Nothing beats paper and cardboard for a cat 🤣 and apparently it makes a better ball than anything else. We will try again soon and I’m sure he’ll love it because that’s just how cats are.

Do your pets like raw eggs? Orca and Falcon do so definitely more for them!

Mitten Variety Treats will be closed for the next few days as we take time to grieve the loss of our sweet Simba.

Simba’s story began in heartbreak. He and his three brothers were thrown into a dumpster when they were only a few weeks old. When we adopted him, he taught me one of the most important lessons I’ve ever learned: not every dog can be trained the same way.

Those first couple of years were hard. He and Kato struggled to get along, I had to muzzle train both of them, potty training felt impossible because of his endless obsession with drinking water, and there were moments when I questioned whether I was doing anything right.

Then, somewhere after he turned two, everything changed.

He grew into the sweetest, most loving boy. He became an incredible big brother to August, Pandora, and Aidan, and the gentle, loyal companion we always knew he could be. Looking back, those difficult days were such a small part of the beautiful life we shared.

Our hearts are broken, but I find comfort imagining Simba running free with Kato and August again. I miss all three of them more than words can say.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we take a few days away from the shop, we do have something new planned for when we return. Hug your pets a little tighter today, they leave paw prints on our hearts forever. ❤️ by @mittenvarietyfarm

The chickens got a surprise visit from their strange new neighbor! We’re calling this brave little bunny Judy Hopps 🐰 by @mittenvarietyfarm

If only all cockerels were this obvious! 😂

If you remember, we purchased two Copper Marans pullets from Family Farm when our broody hen’s eggs were hatching. Well... it turns out one of them may (or may not 💀) be a rooster!

I secretly wanted a Copper Maran rooster, so this feels a little like fate.

While the adults sheltered from the rain, the babies turned a fallen branch into a jungle gym. 🌧️🐥

Kids will be kids, no matter the species 😂

Tonight when I checked on the babies, I had a feeling mom wasn’t going to sleep with them anymore, she has been pushing them away all week and today she was especially distant.

I know it’s completely natural and part of them growing up, but it’s still bittersweet to watch. Seeing these little peepers huddled together without Mom nearby makes my heartache. She’s teaching them independence, but I’m not sure I’m ready for them to grow up just yet.
