Finally finished with what was easily the most physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually draining semester of my life. A miracle to say the least that I made it to this point. But even with how difficult the motivation became to study, show up to lecture, sit down for exams, wake up at 5:30 for an Almost Friday post before the trek to New Bolton, or to be away from my family at this time; I would do it again 10 times out of 10.

To my family: thank you for the constant support, the phone calls, the texts and Tik Toks to check in. Having you by my side from whatever distance kept reminding me why I was doing this.

To V’26: thank you. Thank you for the kind words, thank you for making weeks filled with days of 8 hours of lecture in a dreary basement feel as little like it was. Thank you for always lending a hand to help in labs, or clear something up that was confusing in lecture. Thank you for the happy hours, the nights out in center city, and not punching me out for constantly rooting against Philly teams (go Birds though🦅🫡). V’26, *you* are the reason I kept pushing through when I didn’t want to anymore. I could not imagine going through this semester or any of the rest of this program with any other group. I cannot wait to grow into full VMD’s with you all. taken in University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine by @lindsaygelb

This is my brother, Jacob Patrick Lough. Today, he would have turned 27 years old. He would be at work today, prepping for West Virginia’s baseball game against Penn State tomorrow night. He would have had a lovely dinner with his family this past weekend. Or perhaps he would have spent it exploring Almost Heaven with countless friends. Instead, he was the victim of a senseless act of violence back in January. Yet as we celebrated his life then, it is all the more appropriate to celebrate his memory again.

Because we did get to have several of those family birthdays with him. Some at Nagoya where the staff would sing Happy Birthday with a gong ringing throughout the restaurant. Most huddled around our kitchen table surrounding Pillsbury Funfetti cupcakes. A couple celebrating himself and his brothers at graduations. He would do that because he was always one to make the time of day for someone to celebrate, catch up, help out, or just relax. A player of several team sports that knew what it took to be a team player in all aspects of life.

So today, as Jacob turns 27 in eternal paradise, I will not seeth with rage at the monster that took him that horrific January night. As the great Pitbull said “This is for everybody going through tough times. Believe me, been there, done that. But every day above ground is a great day, remember that.” And Jacob would remember that and would celebrate today. So today, through smiles, through tears, through continued disbelief, through pain, I will celebrate him.

Forever love and miss you, Jacob. 💙💛🏔️ by @lindsaygelb

Dear Jacob,

I have no words - and never will - that adequately describe what I am feeling right now. Even as I write, I still almost cannot believe that this is real.

As much as you annoyed me growing up, as much as I wanted to throw you through the wall playing best on best in the living room (I swear we didn’t break anything, mom and dad). As convinced as I was you cheated at Mario Kart, as sure as I was that the Oreos were for ALL of us, not just you. As much as I despised getting woken up by you walking three feet from your bed to mine and laying on me. As much as I couldn’t stand you stealing my things constantly, or throwing things you didn’t want anymore at me like it was my job to dispose of them. As annoying as it was that you ALWAYS made me turn out the light before bed (even thought it was clearly closer to your bed), or how disgusting it was when you burped your Root Beer right in my face. Or the time you made me swim in the SBHS parking lot to uncover your spot from the snow; I am certain I would trade anything to relive those moments again with you.

Because that would mean I’d get to have one more Pitbull or Nickelback song (no shame) with you, one more Kenny Chesney concert, one more Mountaineer game where we hope to #CueCountryRoads Just have one more trip to Bob Evans, one more round of Wii Bowling, one more crack at the Wake Challenge, one more Disney Duet or Big Bootie Mix in the car, one more Wordle or Mini score text. Play one more round at the Lough Invitational Miniature Golf Tournament, watch one more baseball game, have one more Coors Light, play one more pickup game in the drive (or after mom’s practice when the Principal is kicking us out the door). Watch just one more SpongeBob episode, one more Harry Potter marathon. Just one more anything with you.

I love you so much, Jacob. And you’ll leave behind a hole in my heart and shoes to fill that neither of which can be filled. The evil that fell upon you will never sit right with me, but at least I get to say I have (one of) the best brother(s) in the world. I just wish I could have hugged you longer last Sunday. Say hi to Big Grandma and Grandpa for me, #OkieDokie?

Love,
