हत्तीनामा, the elephant’s chronicle.

Some evenings deserve a second look. On 7 October, Mohsin R. Matwal’s elephants filled Jehangir Art Gallery for his solo show with us. The room moved slowly from canvas to canvas, taking in the animals he has watched closely since he was a boy. This is that night, as we remember it.

With gratitude to our Chief Guests, Mr Vitor Rocha and Mrs Rute Rocha of Retail Mind Group, and Mrs Seema Singh, and to all the artists and guests who graced the evening.

Artist of the Month: Mohsin Matwal.

As a boy, Mohsin would climb onto his father’s lap at dinner with his slate, and until the rotis were ready, his father would draw him an elephant in chalk. “That rhythmic outline of the elephant on the slate stayed with me,” he says. “It feels like the first letter I ever learned in the language of painting.”

Two decades of practice later, that same animal filled Hattinama, The Elephant Chronicle, his first solo show with Mumbai Art House got 60% of his works sold out!

Several paintings from the show are still available. Pricing on enquiry, DM us.

Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s conversion to Buddhism for me is a matter of great courage and ethical conduct. I write about this as I face a moral conundrum as a human who has always decried caste, race, communal and class discriminations. I was privileged to be born in a family that had westernised to a cosmopolitan character out of love marriages, divorces, live-ins, scandals, mercantile shrewdness and life away from any community to call our own. My grandfather was a very progressive person perhaps that he had eloped to Bombay and loved my grandmother and bestowed this privilege on us. But we had not shed an unfortunate privilege - one that of caste. Caste which to an orthodox Brahmin or Kshatriya we could not claim as we are intercaste interlopers of miscegenation but we could ally and blend into upper caste tropes through surnames and the anonymity of the city. One of my reasons of disdain for Varnaashrama arose from my own family’s situation and how people hide this in cities to their convenience.

Every time I visit a major pilgrimage or temple I want to embrace Navayana Buddhism because old habits of casteists die hard. I am a tantric practitioner a tradition we inherited from my grandfather’s mother but the religion it is associated with - it’s history of ostracising and inflicting pain on so many who would have nothing to do with it not only embarrasses me but greatly angers me. This is why I seek syncretism with other faiths that allows me belief without the judgement of mine or the origin of others.

I have researched many strains of Buddhism and I have done so through art - I began in Burma, then Sri Lanka and recently went to Ladakh. I will die a Buddhist and have convinced my parents that all are last rights will be conducted under Buddhist traditions here in Maharashtra.

The pictures posted here are of a mural we were commissioned for a the home of an Ambedkarite gentleman and patron for whom @prabhakar_kamble_ @bb_bhushanbhombale @artist_maheshsoundatte and @mohsin_matwal worked various commissioned works. I worked with Mohsin to draw out Buddha as Metta or eternal friend flanked by the Mt. Sumeru and the arch of the Kelaniya Raj Mahavihara. by @mohsin_matwal
