I’m sure we all got a little excited when we saw the first dustings of snow! Not only are we getting excited for another winter season approaching, but the dates of our 2027 avalanche education courses are now live on the MMA website! Our open-enrollment Rescue Fundamentals and Recreation Level 1 courses are on a pay-what-you-can model to reduce the financial barrier to avalanche education. Whether you can afford the full cost of a course, utilize one of the discount codes available, or make a donation to help support the pay-what-you-can program, we appreciate you and your contributions to the vibrant mountain community in SW Montana! We are an @american_avalanche_association recognized provider for Recreation Level 1 and Rescue Fundamentals courses. That means that when you pursue continuing avalanche education with another A3 provider your course completion will be recognized for pre-requisites. In addition to the Rec 1 and Rescue Fundamentals course, we offer select dates of our custom avalanche rescue seminar program. This is a fully custom built program for you and your group of up to 6 people to practice an in-depth rescue scenario and get additional training and feedback for your specific backcountry goals. Check it out on the MMA website. Remember to follow @mtavalanche for avalanche forecasts through the winter! @spireclimbing @gastrognomemeals @mountainprojectmt @apresbeer @bangtailbikes @crosscut_mt @patagonia_climb @cilogear_official @mountainequipment @sterlingrope @camp_usa #MontanaMountaineering #MountainMentorship #AlpineClimbing #RockClimbing #BackcountrySkiing #MountainGuiding #HyaliteProvides #IceClimbing #MountainEducation by @montanamountaineering
Get to know MMA! Meet guide and instructor, Lindsay Fixmer! How long have you been guiding? How long have you been with MMA? Guiding since 2006, starting with MMA around 2015-2016. Favorite MMA program? Working with the JMT. If you were a piece of climbing or skiing equipment, what would you be? I don't know if I identify as a piece of climbing equipment, but I have favorites. The Petzl Nomic (best ice tool to date); the Petzl Dart (the best crampon for ice climbing to date); the Arcteryx C-Quence (this was the best harness ever made in the world and they should realize their error and bring it back); a new Petzl locking carabiner such as the Attache or Rocha SL; the Edelrid HMPE cord sling is perfect for two piece anchors, fixed point lead belay material and alpine tethers. Favorite snack? Baby food or adult baby food especially when it's cold: it's like a smoothie What is the best lesson you've learned in the mountains? There isn't a best lesson. You're taught something every single day out there, especially if you're paying attention. But because I've been guiding a lot of Granite Peak trips this summer and it's fresh in my mind: 12hr summit days... no longer than 12hrs. Every human begins to fall apart / hit the wall / alpine starfish / get baby moose legs / whatever other expression you want to use after 12hrs (whether slowly or quickly). If you keep that 12hrs in the back of your mind, you can nearly eliminate one of the biggest risks in the mountains. by @montanamountaineering

Get to know MMA! First up, guide and Executive Director: Matt Zia How long have you been with MMA? Since 2019. I started by working with the Inge Perkins Scholarship program, then began instructing Junior Mountaineering Team days and private guiding/instruction, and then in 2021 the board asked me to step into the Executive Director role. Favorite MMA trip to guide/instruct? Undoubtedly the Junior Mountaineering Team. Watching the JMT students grow, mature, and challenge themselves is such a rewarding part of the program. I’ve had the honor to belay JMTers on their first trad leads, supported JMT groups successfully navigating through complex mountain terrain, and been part of thoughtful and inspiring student-led discussions on risk management and decision making, community support, and so much more. If you were a piece of climbing or skiing equipment, what would you be? A Grigri - Jack of all trades, master of none. I try pretty hard to stay sharp in all the mountain disciplines, from rock and ice climbing to steep skiing, but I don’t think I’m a master of any single one. I also really like giving my friends, partners, and clients a belay on their projects, whether literal or metaphorical. Favorite snack? A backcountry charcuterie board is pretty hard to beat. A little block of nice cheese, a bit of prosciutto, and some crackers really hit the spot. But for a quick snack on a skin track or on a multipitch climb I do like a Snickers bar. What is the best lesson you’ve learned from the mountains? Courage and humility. In the mountains, as in life, we need to have the courage to try hard things, but also the humility to keep a student’s mindset, recognize what we don’t know, and stay curious. by @montanamountaineering
Last week we wrapped up our 5-Day Touch the Sky program! Participants learned fundamental climbing skills, such as different techniques and styles, belay communication, different types of rock protection, and Leave No Trace principles. We explored Gallatin Canyon, Allenspur, and Practice Rock. Here are some of the highlights! @spireclimbing @gastrognomemeals @mountainprojectmt @apresbeer @bangtailbikes @crosscut_mt @patagonia_climb @cilogear_official @mountainequipment @sterlingrope @camp_usa #MontanaMountaineering #MountainMentorship #AlpineClimbing #RockClimbing #BackcountrySkiing #MountainGuiding #HyaliteProvides #IceClimbing #MountainEducation by @montanamountaineering
Crag highlight: Gallatin Canyon! We’re lucky to have so many amazing areas to climb around Bozeman, with such variety in rock and style. We want to take a moment to highlight one of our favorites: Gallatin Canyon. Some of the most classic routes were established by renown MSU professor Pat Callis in the 1960s and ‘70s, and the routes continue to be Gallatin Canyon must-dos to this day. Skyline Arete (5.6), Spare Rib (5.8), and The Waltz (5.8) to name a few. Not only is the climbing high quality and accessible, you ascend right next to the pristine Gallatin River! Whether you’re just getting started on your climbing journey, looking for mentorship in trad climbing or multi-pitch routes, planning a fun day of classic moderates, or more, our experienced guides can help you reach your goals in the mountains. @spireclimbing @gastrognomemeals @mountainprojectmt @apresbeer @bangtailbikes @crosscut_mt @patagonia_climb @cilogear_official @mountainequipment @sterlingrope @camp_usa #MontanaMountaineering #MountainMentorship #AlpineClimbing #RockClimbing #BackcountrySkiing #MountainGuiding #HyaliteProvides #IceClimbing #MountainEducation by @montanamountaineering

Today is the final day of Give Big Gallatin Valley, and we’re encouraging our community to show up strong for the organizations that make climbing, learning, and access in Hyalite possible. Bozeman Ice Fest is proud to support and spotlight three incredible nonprofits this year: 1. Montana Mountaineering Association (@montanamountaineering) The parent nonprofit of BIF, MMA is raising funds to support the Junior Mountaineering Team, Touch the Sky youth climbing programs, and their pay-what-you-can model that ensures access for all. 2. Friends of Hyalite (@hyalitecanyon) For 16 years, FOH has helped keep the Hyalite road plowed in the winter, maintained trails, organized cleanups, and funded summer stewards. They are a core part of what makes our canyon so accessible year-round. 3. Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center (@mtavalanche) A trusted resource for backcountry safety and avalanche education, GNFAC provides critical information to help keep our community safe in the mountains. Bozeman Ice Fest is matching up to $2500 dollars in donations for both Friends of Hyalite and GNFAC! There is still time to support these amazing organizations. Head to the links in our story to donate and make your impact before Give Big ends tonight. Every contribution makes a difference! #bozemanicefest #givebiggv #friendsofhyalite #gnfac #montanamountaineering by @montanamountaineering
