Can’t resist…. à few pics from the last couple of days, the garden so richly golden in its fading. Colours changing daily, gorgeously illuminated in both rising and falling light. What an autumn!

Rained out today…..I’m inside looking at garden pics from the last couple of weeks. Here are a few, beginning with sunrise, ending with northern lights, and a couple sunsets and today’s sodden garden along the way. Some views of the sitooterie, with its green roof, inside and out. It’s really settling in now and we absolutely love it - ditto the new pond. Both will only get better as time passes.

October in her element essentially, colours changing all the time, the light illuminating or muting. Sky is the eternal backdrop here, offering up all it does… One of the many joys of living in the north, and in dark sky country. I wouldn’t swap our life here for anything.

Out by the barn pond, morning and evening. Fluffy yew and a jangle of annuals and perennials. Pic 5 - topping it up from the gutter during some welcome rain.
Then walking towards the sitooterie, which is settling in happily to its new position. Feels so right there. Now reimagining the space around it: multistems, grasses, perennials and ferns all waiting to move there in a couple of months.
A snap of the green roof on my last peep at it - delighted. Apart from the grasses (festucas), it’s all seeded/divisions from the garden, leaving plenty of space and opportunity for random arrivals.
Lastly, a couple of uninvited visitors! They’ve taken quite a shine to us and come along 2 or 3 times most days.

More from my evening wanderings over the last few days…luminous plants under Northumbrian skies. Everything’s moving on quickly this year.

2 and 3 - just after Friday’s storm. Such a release.

6 7 and 8 - our sitooterie, freshly liberated from its perch on stilts overlooking the pond, now nestling down by the young trees: a wholly better home. Diving into the fun of evolving the space around it now I can see and (critically) feel the difference moving it has made…the trigger for a massive shift of energy.

Nice to know that with our weather, the larch will grey off and meld in in no time, just as our log sheds and benches and cladding have done.

V keen to camouflage the exposed pond liner….see last pic. Has anyone used coir successfully? Or any other suggestions?

Here and there in the garden over the last few days, all in the evening, apart from the penultimate - greens in my favourite potager corner just now - polystichum braunii, Epimedium versicolor sulphureum, melica uniflora albida and allium Hair, all merrily jostling along under the weeping pear.

What a year. Abundance at every turn, plenty of comings and goings and beings. A real bumper season for pretty much everything, and lots more about to pop….like the roses - mostly still on the cusp with us, and festooned with buds.

Exciting evolutions on the go round the new pond…..more on that soon. Love the Dutch irises…. White van Vliet, Sapphire Beauty, and King Mauve.

Lion King by the Swallow Shed in the anduze pot really gorgeous too.

Last pic is from the east bathroom window at 22.40. Luminous! The joys of living up north.

Hawthorn late yesterday evening, pretty much reaching its peak here in May. Early for us. Flowering gradually rolls from the valley to the moors, and then in a wave up the garden, usually reaching the top of the garden in June.

The potentilla look a bit like offspring!! They’ve been struggling to get going…..the rabbits have gone for them pretty relentlessly. Starting to get a sense of what’s ahead now tho.

A snatch of curlew song - so much of it lately. Heartbreakingly beautiful (I rarely have my phone to hand at just the right moment to catch it…). A huge huge privilege of living here.

And a few other current joys:
First flower on the dog rose this morning!
Thyme - a very old girl now - having her moment in the gravel garden
White camassia in the gravel garden raised beds - also early
Cardamine, such a delicate, gentle presence
And an iris in a pot - I don’t know who she is or where she came from, but I love her .

Cool and green in the heart of the young trees on a hot yesterday. Heaven! We made this bench just 2 or 3 weeks ago, from a slab of wood that I’d been wondering what to do with for ages - until one fine day the penny dropped! As it has a knack of doing. I adore it and find myself drawn there time and again: a world of its own….an intensity of trees and birdsong and vegetation.

The trees we planted in March 2004, a couple of years after we came here - 135 locally grown Northumbrian natives that went in as tiny things. We had a tree planting party, which was great fun - I’d marked out and prepped the holes (not sure I’d have the energy for that now tbh…), then off we all went.

They’ve looked after themselves over the long years since, gently getting on with being who they are. Their growth has been slow and steady and awesome and beautiful, and the space is richer every year.

The vid is the view south from the bench. Top spot.

Curves and colours and evening light….the garden echoing the moor. Both gently fluffing up and unfolding into spring, the slow roll gathering pace daily now. Every time I look out of the window or meander outside there’s more to see and hear and feel and smell. Spring…. 💚

Strolling around in the fading light: a favourite pastime. I love watching the colours change as the day slips away….a particular intensity.
The teardrop has been wonderful this year - cowslips galore, poeticus flowering week after week, and the few sylvestris tulips I planted last autumn still with us - great happiness! We had hundreds there some years ago…..all devoured by rabbits over a couple of springs, along with most of our fritillaries. They’re always after something…..have to enjoy what survives and try not to feel too disheartened. Plenty of challenges…

Friday’s late afternoon sun creating a few mesmerising moments of intensity and luminosity. There, and then gone. Special.

Déjà vu outside today, and another gardening day gone. Beautiful but frustrating - tho some colder air feels very welcome. Inside, the amaryllis have opened in unison! And more buds plumping up. Gorgeous.

Snaps from a cold and invigorating yesterday in London: the gorgeous space at the back of Victoria Miro; inside, time absorbing Chantal Joffe’s huge canvases, I Remember. They stay with you. Meandering nearby streets…came across the Slow Horses cafe! Shut, but never mind. A Coin Op! Big memory lane for me. And a stop at a quirky Austrian cafe in Camden Passage. The whole day endless chatting and laughing with my lovely old flatmate Sylvie - we’re both great talkers, and when we get together, there’s no stopping us. A truly joyous way to spend a wintery Saturday.
