We had a blast celebrating our brilliant award recipients who graduated from the MOR program! #morinitiative #university #student #award by @morinitiative

In March, as we commemorate Women’s History Month, we aim to spotlight the experiences and accomplishments of Black women in post-secondary education in Canada.

This focus is intended not only to shed light on this often overlooked aspect of women’s history but also to underscore that Black history transcends the confines of a single month.

Our journey begins with Mary Matilda (Tilly) Winslow, the first Black woman to graduate from the University of New Brunswick. Throughout the majority of her life, Winslow dedicated herself to education, imparting knowledge in both Halifax and Alabama, USA.

In her later years, she relocated to New England to evade the segregation prevalent in the southern United States. Despite her expertise and passion for teaching, she encountered barriers that prevented her from continuing teaching in public schools.
