The making of a villain is no small feat, and bringing #Clayface to the screen was a monstrous effort. The studio partnered with Legacy Effects (@legacyeffects)to design and create every prosthetic piece #TomRhysHarries wore throughout his character’s transformation. And while the finished product is the stuff of nightmares, nearly everything you see on screen is rooted in reality, relying on hands-on artistry rather than CGI.

“The ice bath Matt has in the makeup trailer was written into the script as Tom would famously start his own routine with us with an icy face plunge,” says makeup and hair designer Nicole Stafford (@motherofrowie). That attention to detail extended to every stage of Hagen’s slow morph into Clayface, with the team grounding even the most gruesome moments in medical research. “Consulting surgeons and medical professionals was essential,” Stafford continues.

Even Rhys Harries’ most gruesome moments, like the airplane scene, were achieved on-set with minimal CGI. “A lot of what you see in the finished film was achieved practically,” Dixie George (@dixiegeorgefx), a member of the Legacy Effects crew, tells Allure.
