Tonight a lot of kids get to be someone else for a few hours: a superhero, a princess, a lion.

At My Refuge House, every day is about a girl becoming more fully herself. A student. A winning teammate on the MRH REAPlympics volleyball team. A new leader in the Lotus Troop, our girls’ own Girl Scout troop. A young woman with a future she gets to name.

That kind of becoming takes time, community, and people who stay. Thank you for being some of those people.

Happy Halloween from all of us at MRH. 🎃 by @movementforfreedom

Meet Izhabella. An 8 year old with a lot of heart. Her sister Princess has already been with us waiting for her. Help us welcome her to @myrefugehouse with open arms.

You support just such a welcome when you attend events like @muchadoforfreedom or @fashioned4freedom and when you create your own peer advocacy and support through @movementforfreedom and personal birthday appeals. Thank you.

Kinda chic to have an unplanned matchy matchy day at the office. 🤣🤩 by @movementforfreedom

I recently heard myself tell our 13 year old that bad stuff is going to happen. Some of it big and terrible, some of it small, and a lot of it out of our control. When we name the hard feelings, find our allies, and lean in with a tiny bit of faith, gratitude, or curiosity, we usually find our way to a new perspective and deeper sense of support. We feel more creative. More connected.

July 30 is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. It’s a heavy day, and we want to spend it talking about connection, because connection is the antidote.

Exploitation counts on isolation. On girls being unseen. On the world feeling big and anonymous.
Our summer has been proof of the opposite. Childhood friends turning up in Denver the same time we were there. A Houston church we met in Colorado. A North Carolina church checking in on us in Cebu. Students half a world away rallying books and prayers. Founding members, former staff, new pastors, an old friend of my mom’s. People finding us. Us finding them. Over and over.

It really is a small world. Thank you for helping make it a safer one for our girls.

Savannah wrote a poem. We hope you might feel as inspired and touched as we do.

I am a girl.
I am a girl that love God and God love me.
I am a girl that is so special with God.
I am a girl that only know my own story.
I am a girl who can make my story new.

Confession: somewhere between the NBA Finals and the World Cup this summer, I remembered I’m a sports fan. 🏀⚽

Not the bracket and box score kind. The kind who can’t stop thinking about the underdog, the team nobody expected to make it that far, the player who left everything on the floor even when the outcome was already decided.

What gets me isn’t the winning. It’s the heart. Watching Cape Verde leave it all on the pitch against Argentina, it hit me: that’s what our girls at My Refuge House do every single day, literally AND figuratively.

Last year, our girls joined a local volleyball league so they could play teams off campus for the first time. More than one girl is now hoping to play in high school and college. We’re already anticipating our first volleyball scholarship. 🏐fingers 🤞

That’s what freedom looks like up close. Not something declared once, but something rebuilt daily through showing up and leaning in, one act of courage at a time.

This July 4th, we’re grateful for everyone who shows up for that kind of freedom. No scoreboard needed.

Let’s now add Alexandra Eala’s Wimbledon journey to the inspiration! 🎾 by @movementforfreedom

There is something sacred about a table set with intention. 🤍

This is one of our favorite kinds of evenings at My Refuge House — our girls and staff sharing a special meal with visitors, laughing, connecting, and experiencing exactly what Laurie Colwin describes. Safety. Festivity. Nourishment. Belonging.

It’s no coincidence that this year’s @fashioned4freedom theme is Gather — because we believe what happens when people gather can change everything.

There is space for you at this table. Sponsorships for this year’s Fashioned for Freedom on 10/21 are now open. Learn more at fashionedforfreedom.com.

Achievement Exams? Passed! Summer camp? You bet! 🎉

After a week of achievement exams, our girls traded textbooks for an entire week of summer camp fun. Our in-house summer camp was planned and led by our amazing staff. A well-earned break, and a great reminder that joy is part of the journey too.

“He’s a really good father.”

It took our CEO a moment to realize she meant for all of our girls. 🥹

Happy Father’s Day to Kuya Paolo and every man who has shown up as a joy-full father figure, whether from across the world or right here on campus. We are so grateful for you. 🕺

Sakura didn’t set out to say anything profound today. She just made something beautiful.

Imagine a world like that . . . where every person knows they have the freedom, the safety, and the space to create. 🌸 by @movementforfreedom

Preparedness looks good on us. 💪

Our girls and staff recently trained with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office . . . and let’s just say, if you ever need CPR, a bandage, or a mock rescue operation, we’ve got you covered.

We’re so grateful for this partnership that makes safety training something our girls actually look forward to. Here at My Refuge House, knowing how to respond in a crisis isn’t just a skill, it’s part of how we take care of each other.

(We’ve also been inspired! It is now on our list to level up by finding someone who will provide an AED for campus. 😅) by @movementforfreedom
